Abstract

Purpose

This biographical sketch aims to describe the life and career of William R. Davidson.

Design/methodology/approach

The biographical research used in this study draws upon extensive personal interviews with the subject, on some archival research, and on extensive analysis of the subject's published scholarship.

Findings

Davidson fashioned a distinguished career as a scholar, teacher, and consultant in retailing management. The founding mission statement for his consulting firm, Management Horizons, included the ambition to “advance the frontier of knowledge in the distribution industries”. Abstract

The death penalty has existed in a state of steady decline for the last two decades, during which state legislatures have been at the center of abolition efforts. Successful abolition is, however, very rare in contrast to how often death penalty repeal bills are introduced across state legislatures, year after year. Indeed, abolition is not a sudden event, but may be many years in the making. Research on the early phases of this process, where the groundwork for enacted legislation is laid, is nevertheless limited. This chapter explores patterns of death penalty bill introductions across all active death penalty states from 1999 to 2018, providing not only an overview of legislative activity at state level but also an analysis of potential factors fueling the activity. It argues that individual legislators play a significant role in the current trend of increased legislative support for a restricted, if not entirely abolished, death penalty, evident both in terms of persistency over time and cooperation across party lines. It also problematizes partisan aspects of legislative activity in the context of legislation on capital punishment.

Abstract

Pacific Bell has pioneered the development of a unique concept for computing the amount of value added by a given component business process before and after process reengineering efforts. Its innovative Process Value Estimation (PVE) methodology enables management to target processes ripe for reengineering and prevent cost cutting that reduces value.

Abstract

Identifies and discusses nine issues the author believes will dominate management development programmes in the immediate future: learning (including “maintenance learning”, “shock learning” and “anticipatory learning”); the power of teams; time as a competitive weapon; dramatic leadership; globalization and transnationalization; flexibility and resilience; customer responsiveness, service or quality; technology and information systems; and systems thinking. Concludes by pointing out that while these themes should not be included in management development programmes simply because they are popular, few become popular without meeting an important need.

Abstract

The dog days for strategists are coming to an end. The rule of reengineering as the main tool for improving corporate performance and competitiveness is in its final death agony. It is becoming clear to most companies that the redesign of business processes to control costs is an insufficient approach to success. Companies need to move beyond business processes and change their business models. Similarly, companies need to move beyond cost control to address the more significant issue of how to create value.
