Abstract

Introduction: Artificial intelligence (AI) is being extensively used to solve complex problems in the industry. AI provides several benefits such as providing visibility in the processes, reducing time, improving accuracy, saving time, helping in the decision-making process, etc. Due to the range of benefits of AI technologies, organisations readily adopt this technology. However, there are several challenges that the organisation faces during the implementation of AI. These challenges are in context to human resource (HR) development for successful implementation of AI across different functions and are discussed in this chapter.

Purpose: Although we know that AI technology is widely accepted in human resource management (HRM) due to its various benefits. But the organisations face many challenges during the implementation of AI. The focus of the study is to explore the literature on AI in HRM, identify the challenges of implementing AI and provide potential future research direction based on a systematic literature review.

Methodology: To explore the literature on AI in HRM, the study undertakes a systematic literature review. The study identifies, analyse and classifies the literature to provide a holistic view of HR challenges in implementing AI. The study is built on a review of 47 documents, including the articles, book chapters and conference papers using the Scopus database for the past 10 years (2012–27 January 2022).

Findings: The study provides an overview of the documents published in Scopus in this area through a systematic literature review. The study reveals that a significant amount of growth in the publication has been shown in the past 10 years. The maximum and continuous growth is shown after 2017. The maximum number of papers are published in India, the USA and China. The study identifies major eight challenges of AI implementation in HRM. The study also provides a secondary case to deep dive in this area based on a systematic literature review.

Research Limitation/Implication: The challenges identified in the study are not empirically tested. Each of the identified challenges should be empirically examined. This study has expanded the body of knowledge of AI in HRM. This study will help the academicians and practitioners work on the identified challenges and help the organisations ease in adopting AI.

Originality/Value: This study represents the first work that integrates AI implementation challenges in HRM.

Abstract

Blockchain is an emerging technology that started in the cryptocurrency sphere with bitcoin but expanded to include numerous applications. This chapter provides an overview of the book. It begins by identifying the three main components of a blockchain. Next, it discusses the book's purpose, distinguishing features, and its intended audience. The chapter then outlines the book's structure, consisting of 22 chapters divided into four main parts. It offers a brief synopsis of each section and chapter. Finally, it ends with a summary and conclusions.

Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to analyze whether information asymmetry (ASYM) plays a mediating role in the relationship between corporate disclosure and cost of equity capital (COEC) in emerging markets such as Indonesia.

Design/Methodology/Approach: This study is a quantitative study using secondary data obtained from listed manufacturing firms from 2015 to 2017. Purposive sampling was used to select 105 firms. The design of this study was causality research, and the analysis was performed through ordinary least squares (OLS) regression and path analysis.

Findings: The results show that the level of disclosure for corporate social responsibility (CSR), intellectual capital, and enterprise risk management (ERM) reduces the COEC by suppressing ASYM. This finding confirms the argument that managers can reduce their companies’ COEC by reducing ASYM through increased disclosure. These results are controlled by earnings quality (EQL) because that is most relevant to the COEC, as well as corporate size, leverage, and differences in institutional factors.

Originality/Value: This research is based on the central assumption that disclosure enhances the level of information while EQL remains the focus for investors. This research is also the first to study CSR disclosure, intellectual capital disclosure, and ERM disclosure together as a proxy for disclosure. The findings confirm that managers can reduce their companies’ agency conflict by increasing their level of disclosure. Managers can also reduce the COEC by reducing ASYM through increased disclosure. This also implies that increasing the level of disclosure will be effective in reducing the COEC for companies in emerging markets, such as Indonesia.

Abstract

This research addresses the grave issue of plastic waste in the Pacific. By using Samoa as a case study, it was considered that distributed recycling combined with 3D printing offers an opportunity to (1) repurpose and add new value to this difficult waste stream and (2) engage diverse local communities in Samoa by combining notions of participatory design with traditional Samoan social concepts. Fieldwork in Samoa established the scope of the issue through interviews with stakeholders in government, waste management businesses, the arts and crafts community and education. Based on the information obtained from the fieldwork, potential product areas and designs were explored through material and 3D printing experiments using low-cost, open-source equipment. The experiments informed the design of speculative scenarios for workable, economically viable, socially empowering and sustainable systems for repurposing and upcycling plastic waste, which then enabled production of practically useful and culturally meaningful 3D printed objects, artefacts and products. Building upon the outcome and with a view towards implementation, Creative Pathways, an educational initiative aimed at propagating 3D printing and contextual design, was established and is being delivered in local schools.

Abstract

The US fossil fuel industry is vulnerable to opposition from other sectors of the ruling class. Non-fossil fuel capitalists might conclude that climate breakdown jeopardizes their interests. State actors such as judges, regulators, and politicians may come to the same conclusion. However, these other elite actors are unlikely to take concerted collective action against fossil fuels in the absence of growing disruption by grassroots activists. Drawing from the history of the Obama, Trump, and Biden presidencies, I analyze the forces determining government climate policies and private-sector investments. I focus on how the climate and Indigenous movements have begun to force changes in the behavior of certain ruling-class interests. Of particular importance is these movements' progress in two areas: eroding the financial sector's willingness to fund and insure fossil fuels, and influencing judges and regulators to take actions that further undermine investors' confidence in fossil fuels. Our future hinges largely on whether the movements can build on these victories while expanding their base within labor unions and other strategically positioned sectors.
