Abstract
Purpose
Previous studies show that the implementation of gender equality encounters resistance in military organizations, but it is often invisible or seen as confined to anonymous structures or troubled individuals. This paper aims to show how the Swedish Armed Forces (SAF) use organizational principles to resist implementing gender equality measures.
Design/methodology/approach
The study is a qualitative analysis of discursive strategies in the SAF’s 2013–2018 annual reports to government.
Findings
The organizing principles of instrumentality and distance, while existing in parallel with gender equality efforts, actually pursue logics that prevents the SAF from implementing gender equality. The principle of instrumentality in this context means that gender equality in the SAF is of secondary interest to organizational members. The principle of distancing from the problem includes strategies that alienate female from male officers.
Originality/value
The contribution of this paper is the finding that the use of organizing principles represents conscious organizational resistance to gender equality efforts. This kind of use needs to be revealed and criticized to change military organizations.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of the study is to examine how women become leaders in the Security Services in Ghana and the challenges they face in the discharge of their responsibilities.
Design/methodology/approach
A qualitative phenomenological approach was adopted to explore the intentions and opinions of the participants, interpret their worlds through their lived experiences and present a clearer understanding of their stories.
Findings
The study revealed that women deliberately positioned themselves to be considered for leadership placements in their male-dominated professions. The study’s findings also suggest that although both men and women are considered equal in the service, women were faced with challenges in their daily experiences as leaders due to their gender. The gender barriers created a strenuous situation for women to rise to top leadership placements in the Security Services.
Originality/value
This research is one of the first studies that explored the experiences of women in middle and top leadership positions in the national Security Services in Ghana. It contributes to the literature by presenting how female leaders in the Security Services successfully navigate into leadership placements, the challenges and their strategies in excelling in their duties. The study is important in bridging the gender gap in leadership positions in the Security Services.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to describe the proposed alpha solar rotary mechanism (ASRM) and how it is used to accurately modify the solar array of the China Space Station (CSS) in orbit to maintain continuous tracking of the sun to provide power. It also highlights the need to evaluate the performance of the ASRM and predict potential failure modes in various extreme scenarios.
Design/methodology/approach
To evaluate the performance of the ASRM, a dynamic model was created and tested under normal and faulty conditions. In addition, a multidirectional stiffness test was conducted on the prototype to verify the accuracy of the ASRM's dynamic model. The high-precision ASRM model was then used to predict potential failure modes and damaged parts in various extreme scenarios.
Findings
The simulation results were in good agreement with the test results, with a maximum error of less than 8.85%. The high-precision ASRM's model was able to accurately predict potential failure modes and damaged parts in extreme scenarios, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed model and simulation evaluation test.
Originality/value
The proposed high-precision ASRM model and simulation evaluation test provide an effective way to evaluate the structural safety and optimize the design of the spacecraft. This information can be used to improve the performance and reliability of the CSS's solar array and ensure continuous power supply to the station.

Abstract
Purpose
A deteriorating security situation and an increased need for defence equipment calls for new forms of collaboration between Armed Forces and the defence industry. This paper aims to investigate the ways in which the accelerating demand for increased security of supply of equipment and supplies to the Armed Forces requires adaptability in the procurement process that is governed by laws on public procurement (PP).
Design/methodology/approach
This paper is based on a review of current literature as well as empirical data obtained through interviews with representatives from the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration and the Swedish defence industry.
Findings
Collaboration with the globalized defence industry requires new approaches, where the PP rules make procurement of a safe supply of defence equipment difficult.
Research limitations/implications
The study's empirical data and findings are based on the Swedish context. In order to draw more general conclusions in a defence context, the study should be expanded to cover more nations.
Practical implications
The findings will enable the defence industry and the procurement authorizations to better understand the requirements of Armed Forces, and how to cooperate under applicable legal and regulatory requirements.
Originality/value
The paper extends the extant body of academic knowledge of the security of supply into the defence sector. It serves as a first step towards articulating a call for new approaches to collaboration in defence supply chains.

Abstract
Purpose
Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is regarded as a region with one of the worst cases of armed conflict and climate risk. This paper examines the interactive effect of armed conflict and climate risk on gender vulnerability in SSA.
Design/methodology/approach
The difference and system generalised method of movement (GMM) were used to examine the relationship between the variables using annualised data of 35 SSA countries from 1998 to 2019.
Findings
The paper found strong evidence that armed conflict and climate change are positive predictors of gender vulnerability. The impact of climate change on gender vulnerability is found to be more direct than indirect.
Practical implications
The direct and indirect positive effect of armed conflict and climate change on gender vulnerability implies that climate change drives gender vulnerability through multiple channels. This underscores the need for a multi-disciplinary policy approach to addressing gender vulnerability problem in SSA.
Originality/value
The study contributes to the climate action debate by highlighting the need for climate action to incorporate gender inclusive policies such as massive investment in infrastructure and safety nets that offer protection to the most vulnerable girls and women affected by armed conflict and climate change. Societies should as a matter of urgency strive to structural barriers that predispose girls and women to biodiversity loss.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to study the influences of eccentricity on the fastener load and bearing strength of the eccentric connection in the aircraft structure.
Design/methodology/approach
The special experiment is designed for the researches. The fastener loads of the eccentric connection are gained by using the derived formulas and numerical analysis, and the fastener load rules is verified by the experiment. The bearing strength of the eccentric connection is investigated by the experiments under different eccentricities compared with that gained from the experiment.
Findings
The study results are summarized as follows. Magnitude of the fastener load in the eccentric connection is greatly affected by distance from the fastener to the centroid of the fastener cluster and that from the fastener to the concentrated load. With the increase of eccentricity of the homolateral concentrated load, the fastener load increases, and difference of the fastener loads becomes larger, forming the short plate effect of the bucket. It means that fastener with the maximum load (the shortest plate of the bucket) leads to decrease of the bearing strength of the eccentric connection (the capacity of the bucket).
Originality/value
The investigation on the influence of eccentricity on the bearing strength of eccentric connection is firstly presented. The vector expression of the fastener load in eccentric connection is firstly derived. And the influencing mechanism of the fastener load on the bearing strengths of the different eccentric connections is demonstrated. The study results can provide guidance for the structure design of the eccentric connection.
