Abstract

To raise public awareness of protecting Buddhist temples, this study considers Hebei Province of China as an example, and explores the value of architectural planning and design of Buddhist temples. After 11 Buddhist temples in Hebei Province of China are selected, the paper adopts a Delphi method and questionnaire survey method, establishes the value evaluation system from four dimensions: historical value, artistic value, scientific value, and sociocultural value; and calculates the value of the Buddhist temples’ architectural planning and design according to expert rating. Research results indicate the following. Puning Temple, Jinhe Temple, and ShiEn Temple rank at the top because they are complete extant ancient buildings and have beautiful architectural styles. Chongguang Temple and other Buddhist temples have low comprehensive score because they are severely damaged and other reasons. The comparative study indicates that Buddhist temples at different historical periods have different architectural heritage values, and different influencing factors exert different effects on the architectural heritage value. The study establishes an evaluation indicator system, studies the value of Buddhist temples’ architectural planning and design, and achieves certain innovative research perspective. The evaluation of the value of Buddhist temples’ architectural planning and design can help the public gain a better understanding of the value of temple architectural culture. This understanding benefits the preservation of the temple building heritage.

Abstract

Purpose

Sustainable development requires a mental shift that induces behavioral modification. Education is central to sustainable development as it alters an individual's worldview. Egypt is a signatory to Agenda 2030 and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Many Egyptian educational institutions have adopted the universal trend of incorporating sustainability and SDGs into their curricula. A recent UN assessment reports that Egypt faces challenges in meeting most SDGs. Therefore, this article investigates how students' knowledge, attitude and practices reflect their awareness regarding sustainability? Has their education induced any behavioral changes? What is the instructors' role in mainstreaming sustainability?

Design/methodology/approach

The article investigates the progression of environmental consciousness among Egyptian architectural students and its relationship to sustainability. There are two sources of data: (1) documents, including study plans and course descriptions, and (2) a questionnaire developed and distributed electronically among students from public, private and international schools. The authors used a variety of data analysis methods. They used SPSS for statistical analysis to determine similarities among the students and correlations between variables. They then used Atlas.ti to analyze curricula, study plans and student replies to open-ended questions.

Findings

The interrogated curricula equate sustainability with the environment, as some consider energy conservation equivalent to environmental conservation and protection. Others emphasized environmental control issues as measures of green architecture. The results suggest that students' knowledge and awareness are not conducive to practices expected to yield sustainable designs. The impact of architectural and planning education on altering their attitudes is minimal. Public schools treat students as passive objects, whereas international and some private schools attempt to adhere to the globally accepted architectural pedagogy ideals, transforming the student's mindset.

Research limitations/implications

Education in architecture is crucial to achieving sustainable development because it prepares future professionals who can contribute to sustainability through their practice. The findings show that architectural and planning education has a negligible effect on students' knowledge and attitudes, which influence their practices. Reforming architectural and planning education is a requirement to accomplish the SDGs. The reform requires instructors to introduce students to the theory of knowledge and critical thinking, thus enabling graduates to be competitive in global labor markets. Reforming education will direct the research agenda of staff members and graduate students toward contemporary research problems.

Originality/value

The research method that mixes qualitative and quantitative methods of inquiry is the first aspect of the originality of the research. Linking teaching methods in the studio with instructors' understanding of sustainability can explain why sustainable development is not clear in architectural and planning education in Egypt, which influences both professional practice and scientific research. Finally, the paper highlights the role of universities to be sustainable in embedding the concept and changing students' mindsets, thus improving Egypt's stand on the SDGs index.

Abstract

Color is the dominant element of visual communication design. For cities, color is one of their characteristics. Improving the overall style of a city through the control and planning of architectural color has been a hot issue in urban control and planning in recent years. Considering color pollution in urban planning, we analyze the important role of color in visual communication design from the perspective of the visual communication concept of media art. The current situation of residential building colors in Shanghai City is investigated. We determine the residents’ preferences and requirements related to architectural exterior color on the basis of a data analysis of color and material selection, color matching, composition, and others. This study changes the traditional architectural color design concept that centers on individuals and lacks overall control. Specifically, we construct a set of multi-scale color controlling and planning systems at the macro-, meso-, and micro-scales. We also guide and control the urban architectural color such that it is in accordance with the systematic color planning strategy. This method enables the systematic and holistic external color planning of urban residential buildings.

Abstract

Purpose

Commemorating the 15th year anniversary of discourse, knowledge dissemination in architecture and urbanism through the contributions published in Archnet-IJAR: International Journal of Architectural Research, since March 2007, this article aims to capture, unpack and categorize the key content of published research outputs during the last five years into knowledge spaces.

Design/methodology/approach

While referring to key statistics of various recognized databases in order to highlight the journal growth, development and performance, the approach to the analysis is inspired by Crysler's Writing Spaces: Discourses of Architecture, Urbanism and the Built Environment. This is established through a preliminary conceptual content analysis that enables the development of specific content categories representing knowledge spaces based on the overall contributions to the journal since its inception in 2007 and then mapping the recent contributions, developed over the past five years (2017–2021), to these knowledge spaces. The thrust of the analysis is to instigate a structured understanding of Archnet-IJAR role in the development and dissemination of knowledge in architecture and urbanism.

Findings

The examination of the content and the analysis reveal two broad categories of knowledge spaces: established and evolving. Established knowledge spaces are recognized in terms of theorizing architectural and urban production; the public realm and assessment of designed environments; housing, the informal and the vernacular; urban heritage and historic environments; and architectural and urban politics. Evolving knowledge spaces were acknowledged in terms of architectural education and design pedagogy; collaborative planning and community design; architectural and urban sustainability and resilience; health, wellbeing and engaging with nature; and COVID-19 spatial and pedagogical implications. Characterized by clear definition and at the same time transparent borders, the identified knowledge spaces have the potential of generating further possibilities for future knowledge spaces.

Research limitations/implications

In addition to a holistic analysis based on the scrutiny of contributions as they progressed from submissions to reviews to publishing, future work would involve more systematization, in-depth engagement with metadata and should benefit from IT applications and data mining software packages.

Practical implications

This article is regarded as a cognizance platform and an enabling mechanism for researchers and future contributors to identify the unique particularities of their research, the nature of the content they aim to develop and the way in which that content may contribute to one or more knowledge spaces.

Originality/value

Establishing an understanding of the knowledge spaces which represent contributions published in Archnet-IJAR, the knowledge spaces identified demonstrate diversity and plurality; diversity in ontological interpretations of the nature of reality and plurality and pluri-epistemology in terms of how methods are pursued and the way in which such interpretations are developed, recorded, documented and communicated. These are knowledge spaces of possibilities and anticipation of growth, evolution and development.

Abstract

Purpose

“Can artificial intelligence produce architectural plan schemes?” discussion is the starting point of this study. The aim of this paper is to question whether this will be a new method in architectural design by producing plans with artificial intelligence interfaces working with human–computer interaction and to create a discussion environment.

Design/methodology/approach

The main research topic is the evaluation of architectural design decisions with the text-to-image generation AI algorithms method based on shape grammar rules. First, a sample space consisting of Palladio plans or plan diagrams was created. Plan diagram production experiments were made with different interfaces (Midjourney, Dall-e2, Stable Diffusion, Craiyon, Nightcafe), and alternative plan diagrams were recorded as outputs. The discussion of the outputs has been made over architectural design and space.

Findings

In the conceptual design phase of the architectural discipline and in the production of architectural plan scheme, AI algorithms are trending. This interaction imposes a new responsibility on architects. AI can create paradigm shifts in architectural processes with its tools with high data processing potential. On the other hand, in this study, it is emphasized that architecture is not just an act of producing visuals, but a functional act of producing visuals.

Originality/value

The technology is effective in producing architectural plans and directing them to artificial intelligence algorithms. With this study, multi-alternative architectural plan productions were tried with text-to-image bots with fast results. In this direction, a new method proposal has been developed for the conceptual design phase in architecture.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the research is to propose reforms that would help to bridge the gap between theory and practice and produce more effective urban planners. The research on urban planning curricula in the global South is a valuable contribution to the field of urban planning education. It provides a new perspective on the challenges facing urban planning education in these countries and offers a roadmap for improvement.

Design/methodology/approach

The research explores and evaluates the urban planning curricula in the global South, with a particular interest in Egypt. The research employs the use of questionnaires with 56 university instructors, analysed thematically, to evaluate the current content of curricula. The results are compared and correlated with a pilot study exploring research interest, government policies and practices of urban planning in Egypt.

Findings

Through comparing the results of the evaluation with the current research interest in urban planning in Egypt, the paper investigates the possibility of improving current educational curricula using comparative network analysis which would establish stronger interdisciplinary connections.

Originality/value

The seeming disconnects between urbanism concepts taught in educational curricula and their relevance in practice and reality is a vital issue in urban studies and planning. Interdisciplinary connections with topics like politics, economies, gender, and others can assist curricula in becoming more relevant to real-world situations. This disconnect is even more apparent in the global South where most educational content is highly derivative from Northern contexts. Though such interdisciplinary aspects are under discussed in educational curricula, they are frequently discussed in academic research.

Abstract

Purpose

The importance of architectural marketing capabilities (i.e. marketing planning and implementation) in exporting ventures has been recognised. However, extant literature has not taken into account the explicit roles and required synergy between the exporter and their foreign distributor in delivering these capabilities. Drawing from the resource-based theory, the purpose of this paper is to examine the complementarity of distributor implementation capability and market orientation with exporter planning capability.

Design/methodology/approach

The study was carried out using a survey. Data were collected from 147 Greek exporters who replied to our questionnaire and the hypotheses were tested using the full information maximum likelihood estimation procedure.

Findings

The results support the hypotheses about the importance of exporter planning capability on financial performance and the complementary role of distributor market orientation. Further, the authors find that the distributor’s implementation capability partially mediates the impact of the exporter’s planning capability on financial performance.

Originality/value

This study contributes to a better understanding about the complementarity of exporter and distributor capabilities. It demonstrates the crucial role of the distributor in the deployment of architectural capabilities for the export venture: the distributor’s market orientation and implementation capability have the final say in achieving higher levels of export performance.

Abstract

The persistence of difficulties related to communication of the stakeholders in the architectural and urban design process is mainly due to the diversity of interests, different perspectives, representation problems and the abilities of visual communication. The paper delves extensively into communication abilities and divides between experts and non-experts, exploring their epistemological origins and possible solutions. One of them, education about spatial issues for general public, is argued for and supported by in the form of a digital education tool. It builds on the idea that non-expert public should be approached with both: adaptation to its abilities and with additional teaching to improve these abilities. The experiment puts the prototypical architectural educational interface to the test in primary schools and observes the effect the level of interactivity has on learning outcomes. The results show possible ways of enhancing the efficiency of such tools and help developers and designers evaluate and fine-tune them for the process of non-professional architectural learning. The communication and attitude-changing topics are discussed from the specific architectural and from broader social science point of view.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to report a study of architectural development and organizational meanings and uses of space in a Finnish university.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper draws from actor‐network theory and Lefebvre's spatial‐social approach to shed light on the organizational assumptions of the various building phases and how current employees use and make sense of the architectural space in the case organization. The methods used include participant observation, interviews of employees and architects, and interpretation of planning documents, architectural statements and administrative representations of the complex.

Findings

It took over 30 years to build the campus. The original plans for the university buildings were substantially revised as architectural and organizational paradigms changed over time. However, regardless of the more recently built state‐of‐the‐art facilities, the early architectural design ideas have persisted as material‐social forces that participate in the ongoing production and reproduction of organizational space.

Originality/value

Despite of the recent surge of writings on organizational space and architecture, there are relatively few empirical studies done on the topic. In particular, analyses investigating the travel of design ideas from architectural planning to actual physical constructions and further to the everyday organizing practices of employees have so far been rare in organizational literature. This paper partially fills this gap.

The construction of regional financial center can gather a large amount of financial production elements and capital, which plays an important role in promoting regional economic development. Based on this, the analysis of the planning and design of regional financial center based on the financial structure was studied. Firstly, the research progress of regional financial center and financial structure was expounded. Then, on the basis of the functional demand of the financial center, the planning and design method of the regional financial center was put forward. The regional center building in Nanjing was taken as an example, and the specific planning and design of the traffic, super high-rise landmark buildings, squares and other buildings were analyzed with the advantage of location. The research shows that the design and planning of the regional financial center can provide the new coordinates of globalization for the local finance.
