Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to identify and discuss the reasons why business models fail, while also identifying the features necessary to develop a method that enables the evaluation of the implementation process of the business model, and is able to help in its development.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed method (roadmap for implementation of business models – RIBM) is composed of nine steps, and seven initials conditions (limitations). Such conditions reduce its complexity (e.g. performance management system is defined in the company).

Findings

Some reasons why business models fail (alignment between value proposition and customer segment (value proposition); business model financial viability (costs and revenue); environmental constraints not fully integrated with the design of the business model (environment); business model execution (management), etc.) and made some considerations about the implementation of business models.

Research limitations/implications

This work was developed in a small business (with a small team and the external member). The business complexity level and number of processes involved are much smaller when compared with a mid-size or large company. Another factor that contributed to mitigating the problem is that the enterprise had a well-structured report once the owners had made annual analysis and discussed how to improve and expand the business.

Practical implications

In this application, RIBM showed a potential tool to minimize flaws in implementation processes of business models.

Originality/value

The business model concept is relatively new in the literature. And because of its strategic importance has been the target of all major schools in the area. This work, in particular, deals with the question-related failures that occur in the process of implementing business models.

Abstract

Purpose

Product development process (PDP) in the context of Industry 4.0 may present several marketing implications. To understand these implications, the purpose of this study is to identify the benefits and difficulties of Industry 4.0 related to the PDP and its impact in marketing strategies and operations.

Design/methodology/approach

The methodology used to perform this research was a systematic literature review. For this, five steps were followed, namely, research question formulation; studies location; studies selection and evaluation; analysis and synthesis; and reporting and use research results.

Findings

The systematic literature review considering PDP in Industry 4.0 context resulted in 28 benefits and 14 difficulties, in a total of 53 articles. From the analysis of these benefits and difficulties, several implications for marketing were identified, namely, better understand customer preferences; greater agility in marketing decision-making; better align marketing, product development and operations processes issues; better understand product/service lifecycle; analyze possibilities of new ways of distribution and communication channels; better define the value of products and services and location requirements.

Originality/value

The findings presented here can be used both by market professionals, interested in the subject and by researchers for future studies. The better understanding of PDP in the context of Industry 4.0 can enhance marketing strategies for market professionals and provide insights for researchers. No similar studies were found in the literature.

Abstract

Purpose

This article aims to investigate the most applied lean warehouse practices in Brazilian warehouses.

Design/methodology/approach

To perform this research, three phases were conducted: a literature review, a multiple case study, and an analysis of lean warehouses practices implementation by an engineering committee. Thus, both qualitative and quantitative approaches were used. Additionally, the study has an applied nature, with an exploratory and descriptive character.

Findings

Results showed that regardless of the type of criterion used, the most implanted practices are those that do not involve investments in technology. On the other hand, practices like RFID and Cross Docking systems were not found in any of the operations, which shows numerous possibilities for improvement.

Originality/value

The main contribution of this article is to initiate a debate about the management and productivity of Brazilian warehouses, a theme still little explored by the academic community despite the importance that the logistic scenario represents for Brazil as an emerging country and leader in Latin America, participating actively in several global supply chains.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyse the significance and impact of different resource types and their features on the operation of business model innovation (BMI) based on new technologies and their effects. Specifically, the relationships of nine different types of resources, as well as their features in terms of VRIO and VARIM concepts, and 10 BMI effects of operation were examined. The significance and impact of resources on the operation of BMI are pretty well established in the literature. However, when the analysis is narrowed down to BMI based on new technologies, there is very little research in this field. This is partly because of the subject’s novelty and the wide range and complexity of this phenomenon.

Design/methodology/approach

The research covers 483 Polish companies that implement BMI based on new technology. For gathering data, the computer-assisted telephone interview method was used. Analysis is based on Spearman correlation. Results meet the requirement of p-value = 0.01 and are statistically significant and representative.

Findings

The main findings of this paper is that there is a need for building interdependency and synergy between individual types and features of resources and thus properly arrange and orchestrate them to succeed. Moreover, there are several patterns that stand out from the analysis, with the leading role of employees, technology, dynamic capabilities and know-how being the key enablers of BMI transformation.

Practical implications

The paper presents several compounds and relationships that shed light on the application and effects of BMI based on new technologies in terms of resource utilization, which can help business owners and senior managers to make consistent decisions in matching and orchestrating resources.

Originality/value

This study clarifies theoretical concepts building a resource-based view (VRIO, VARIM, dynamic capabilities, etc.) and their impact on BMI based on new technology. The results expand and complement existing research by shedding new light on resource utilization and orchestration.
