Abstract

This chapter explores how critical language theory could be applied to the language dynamics in higher education that is created by internationalization and university's traditional role in maintaining national languages. Language policy is an instrument of governance that is increasingly used to regulate the linguistic situation at the university, so it is at the center of my analysis. As a broad concept, language policy is not limited to the formulations of the policy text but includes interactions of different actors and addresses instruments mediating the university's linguistic situation. A critical approach highlights that language policy is permeated with power, which is unequally distributed between different actors. I suggest further conceptualization of the language dynamics of the internationalized university created by national language protection and internationalization through three layers of analysis. The first layer derives from the Bourdieu's approach to language in society focusing on the societal hierarchies that are underpinned by language use. It also includes a discussion about structure versus agency, and a conversation about the navigational capacities of individuals to challenge preestablished social structures. The second layer discusses dialogue as a theoretical approach to the process of negotiating language policy. This is where agency is being realized, depending on the relative power of different actors in the particular social context. The third layer explores the conception of language, how different ways to understand what language is are turned into policy principles.

Abstract

The paper presents the concept of Solidarity Economy proposed by the Austrian-Brazilian economist and professor Paul Singer who passed away in 2018 at age 86 years in his home in São Paulo. Singer arrived at the concept of Solidarity Economy by mixing utopian socialist thought originated in Europe during the Industrial Revolution with the wisdom of Latin American working people to find alternative paths to the capitalist economic system. Following the teachings of Paul Singer, we, as practitioners and academics, report the first stage of the formation of a popular cooperative in the sector of recycling that occurred between 2019 and 2021 in the Town of Goiás, Goiás, Brazil. Our analysis of this collective endeavour leads to two main lessons: first, Solidarity Economy is an even broader proposal of an alternative to the capitalist economy than Paul Singer imagined, because its roots are not restricted to the European cooperativism of the nineteenth century, and second, economics must be taught in more popular way because the most urgent economic problems affect primarily the working people.

Abstract

Purpose

This quasi-experimental study examined the effectiveness of audio-visual and written feedback (AVF + WF) on undergraduate students versus only receiving WF in the context of an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) online classroom during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) lockdown.

Design/methodology/approach

The study used the estimator Difference in Difference (DID) to compare a treated and control group in a pre-and post-test under the application of six treatment sessions, plus a student's perception survey at the end of the treatment. The treated group that received the multimodal feedback showed higher improvement rates in the paragraph content between the first and final drafts than students in the control group.

Findings

Results indicated that receiving a combination of AVF + WF had a statistically significant effect on mechanics (p < 0.001) and the use of transition words (p = 0.003).

Practical implications

These findings will benefit educational agents, professors and stakeholders for social and economic development.

Originality/value

While previous studies have only used student perceptions of the feedback, this study contributes with empirical data through quasi-experimental analysis and measures the effectiveness of feedback in online learning environments.

Abstract

Purpose

The objective of this study was to evaluate Brazilian consumers’ perceptions of stingless bee honey and the drivers involved in this product choice.

Design/methodology/approach

Three projective techniques were applied to 480 consumers who answered a rating task about liking, health, sustainability, quality taste, and utilization as ingredients, fulfilled completion sentences, and performed a hard laddering task.

Findings

The results showed a significant increase in the expected liking and flavor, and consumers perceived stingless bee honey as more sustainable, of higher quality, and more beneficial to health. Health, sustainability, and taste are the main drivers of purchasing this type of honey, and consumers are aware that it costs a premium price. In the value chain involved in choosing stingless bee honey, the appreciation of native bees, flavor, nutritional value, medicinal properties, producer appreciation, and curiosity were strong aspects for choosing the product. These aspects lead consumers to feel good, have peace of mind, feel like protecting nature and planets, and longevity.

Originality/value

Honey is popular worldwide, but stingless bee honey has little information on how consumers perceive it and on the purchasing decision chain. The results of the present study provide important information to enhance the consumption of this product with social and environmental importance and the growing demand for natural products that replace refined sugars.
