Abstract

Purpose

The current study seeks to investigate, why and how faculty members of Indian central universities are using academic social networking sites (ASNs) for research communication and information dissemination, as well as validate and update the results of previous scholarship in this area. To achieve this, the paper uses structural equation model (SEM).

Design/methodology/approach

A simple random sampling method was adopted. Online survey was conducted using a well-designed questionnaire circulated via email id among 3384 faculty members of Indian Central Universities. A SEM was designed and tested with International Business Machines (IBM) Amos. Apart from this, Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) 22 and Microsoft Excel 2010 were also used for data screening and analysis.

Findings

The study explores that most of the respondents are in favour of using the ASNs/tools for their professional activities. The study also found that a large chunk of the respondents used ASNs tools during day time. Apart from it, more number of faculty members used ASNs in research work than general purpose. No significant differences were found among the disciplines in use behaviour of ASNs in scholarly communication. Three hypotheses have been accepted while two were rejected in this study.

Research limitations/implications

The study was confined to the twelve central universities, and only 312 valid responses were taken into consideration in this study.

Originality/value

The paper demonstrates the faculty members’ use behaviour of ASNs in their research communication. The study also contributes new knowledge to methodological discussions as it is the first known study to employ SEM to interpret scholarly use of ASNs by faculty members of Indian central universities.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the relationship between tool adoption and information literacy within smallholder farmers (SHFs).

Design/methodology/approach

A structured questionnaire was used to gather data for this quantitative study from 225 SHFs. Structural equation modelling was done to test the hypotheses.

Findings

The findings established that tool adoption dimensions (Information and communication technologies (ICT) acceptance, language use and information culture) positively and significantly influenced information literacy. Information culture had the strongest impact.

Research limitations/implications

The study enriches the situated learning theory (SLT) literature by introducing tool adoption as a predictor of information literacy in a new context of SHFs. Use of tools as independent variables is a positive deviation from previous studies that have used them as mediating variables. Despite the contributions, the cross-sectional design study undermines the ability to solicit more detailed perspectives from the lived in experience of the respondents.

Practical implications

Managers should promote usage of context-specific tools like local radio stations and mobile phones, but also use language tailored to farmer contexts when disseminating information. Policymakers should leverage on social and cultural settings when designing information interventions.

Social implications

The study highlights critical factors that significantly promote information use for improved productivity for SHFs, cumulatively increasing the country’s gross domestic product (GDP). Socially, findings may reduce on their poverty levels of farmers.

Originality/value

This study offers a novel perspective in information literacy domain by using the SLT to delineate contextual tools that are paramount in predicting of information literacy in an under research informal context of SHFs.

Abstract

Purpose

The study aims to identify the determinants of customer satisfaction in the electronic commerce (e-commerce) industry in Bangladesh. It also investigates whether acceptance of IT innovation mediates the relationship between the determinants of e-commerce and customer satisfaction.

Design/methodology/approach

A survey questionnaire had been designed and distributed among the customers of e-commerce businesses. Data were collected from 408 respondents, who were mostly from urban areas of the country. The collected data had been analysed with the application of the partial least square approach using SmartPLS4. First, the measurement model was applied to determine the validity and reliability of the dataset. Then, the structural model was utilized to justify the hypothesis.

Findings

The results showed that customer service, perceived ease of use and customer trust in e-commerce services have a significant positive impact on customer satisfaction. The acceptance of IT innovation, which showed a positive influence on customer satisfaction, enhanced customer satisfaction when accompanied by perceived ease of use and digital literacy.

Practical implications

The results would have valuable insight for the e-commerce business in designing their products and services and taking policies to achieve long-term customer loyalty.

Originality/value

This is the first study that incorporates IT innovation acceptance as a mediating variable. Although a number of factors have been identified as the determinants of customer satisfaction, the specific mechanism of IT innovation acceptance as a mediator between predictors and customer satisfaction is unique in this study.
