Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to explore the opportunities and challenges associated with adopting artificial intelligence (AI) in libraries in Bangladesh and provide recommendations to guide the responsible integration of AI to enhance library services and accessibility.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper reviews relevant literature on the applications of AI in libraries, the current state of technology adoption in Bangladeshi libraries and the ethical considerations surrounding AI implementation. It analyzes the potential benefits of AI tools such as chatbots, intelligent search engines, text-to-speech and language translation for improving user services and inclusion. The challenges of infrastructure constraints, lack of resources and skills, data privacy issues and bias are also examined through the lens of the Bangladeshi context.

Findings

AI offers transformative opportunities to automate operations, strengthen user services through 24/7 virtual assistants and personalized recommendations and promote accessibility for diverse users in Bangladeshi libraries. However, significant challenges such as inadequate technology infrastructure, funding limitations, shortage of AI-skilled staff, data privacy risks and potential biases must be addressed. Strategically planning for sustainable implementation, building AI capacity, prioritizing ethical AI development and fostering collaborations are critical factors for successful AI adoption.

Originality/value

This paper provides an in-depth analysis of the prospects and obstacles in leveraging AI specifically for libraries in Bangladesh. It offers original insights and context-specific recommendations tailored to the needs and constraints of a developing nation working to harness AI’s potential to create dynamic, inclusive knowledge centers serving all communities.

Abstract

Purpose

Artificial intelligence (AI) is one of the emerging technologies of this time. AI is a widely used technology in library services that can transform the best services in the age of information technology. This paper aims to highlight the use of AI in library operations. Several research has been undertaken on this subject, but that only address a few applications. AI and libraries have a substantial nexus; nevertheless, the use and awareness of AI in library services are still creating question marks addressed in this paper. This study will help the policy stakeholder, librarians and scholars in the field to address these issues before the deployment of AI in library services.

Design/methodology/approach

This study is based on a qualitative method using content analysis techniques. An extensive review of literature on “artificial intelligence”, “smart libraries” was carried to ascertain the emerging technologies in the smart library domain. Literature was searched against various keywords like artificial intelligence, smart technologies, Internet of Things, electronic resource management, data mining and ambient intelligence. This study highlights the pros and cons of AI in library services and its possible solutions.

Findings

The findings of this study show that AI is a vibrant technology that can be used in library services; however, some obstacles like adequate funds, the attitude of librarians and technical skills are a few obstacles that hamper AI in library operations. The findings also reveal that using AI in library operations will accelerate libraries in the right direction. Furthermore, this study highlights various applications that can be deployed without spending costs.

Practical implications

This paper may be of interest to academic, librarians, policymakers, researchers and the government to have a perspective on initiatives in the country on application of technology in library services. This study can introduce the current status and potential of this technology to bring the technology revolution in library and information center services.

Social implications

This study will motivate library professionals to take advantage of AI in library services and further accelerate library operations in the right direction.

Originality/value

This study covers the understanding of AI in library services that will help the librarian’s and information professionals leverage AI in library scenarios. Furthermore, the practical implication of AI in library services will bring positive change in implementing AI.

Abstract

Purpose

Artificial intelligence (AI) is one of today’s rising technologies. AI is a commonly used technology in library services that have the potential to revolutionise the best offerings in the information age. With AI in libraries, users can explore the world of knowledge like never before with smart recommendations tailored to their needs. Overall, AI can enhance the library experience of both the users and library professionals with innovation and smart decisions. Hence, there is no doubt that AI and libraries have a close relationship; nonetheless, the usage and understanding of AI in library services continue to raise concerns, especially in the developing countries which this paper addresses. The purpose of this research paper is to review the current prospects and challenges of implementing AI in library services in developing countries. The primary objective of the study is to discern the pivotal predicaments and obstacles these nations face while implementing AI-based solutions and to propose pragmatic solutions.

Design/methodology/approach

The present study adopts a qualitative approach, using content analysis techniques to glean meaningful insights. An extensive review of the extant literature on the subject was conducted, which was meticulously analysed to furnish the findings of this study. The review is limited to English language sources, and searches were conducted using various online academic databases.

Findings

The review reveals that the prospects of implementing AI in library services in developing countries are significant, with potential benefits including improved access to information, increased efficiency and productivity and enhanced user experience. However, the review also identifies several challenges, including the lack of infrastructure and resources, the shortage of skilled personnel, the absence of data privacy regulations, digital divide and the high cost of implementing AI-based solutions.

Practical implications

The review suggests several practical solutions to overcome the challenges faced by developing countries in implementing AI in library services. These include partnerships between libraries and technology firms, investment in infrastructure and resources, training and capacity building for library staff and the development of regulatory frameworks to protect user data.

Originality/value

This research paper provides a comprehensive review of the prospects and challenges of implementing AI in library services in developing countries. The study is original in its focus on the perspectives of developing countries, their problems and obstacles. The study also provides practical recommendations that can be used by library managers, policymakers and technology firms to support the implementation of AI-based solutions in developing countries.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate AI literacy proficiency among LIS researchers in Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries. This study also aims to assess current proficiency levels, identify challenges and gaps, explore recommendations for improving skills and examine how researchers stay updated on AI advancements.

Design/methodology/approach

A structured questionnaire was used to collect data, then analysed using appropriate statistical methods.

Findings

Most respondents showed proficiency in various aspects of AI literacy for LIS research. However, some aspects, such as understanding AI concepts, ethical considerations and programming skills, had lower proficiency levels. Factors influencing AI literacy included limited resources for enhancement, lack of awareness and insufficient AI-related courses in LIS education.

Originality/value

This study presents an original assessment of AI literacy proficiency among LIS researchers in ASEAN countries, shedding light on the current state of AI knowledge in the region’s library and information science field. The findings identify specific gaps and challenges, offering valuable insights for policymakers, educators and stakeholders seeking to enhance AI literacy skills in this context.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to focus on the trends and projection for future use of artificial intelligence (AI) in libraries. AI technologies is the latest among the technologies being used in libraries. The technology has systems that have natural language processing, machine learning and pattern recognition capabilities that make service provision easier for libraries.

Design/methodology/approach

Systematic literature review is done, exploring blogs and wikis, to collect information on the ways in which AI is used and can be futuristically used in libraries.

Findings

This paper found that uses of AI in libraries entailed enhanced services such as content indexing, document matching, content mapping content summarization and many others. AI possibilities were also found to include improving the technology of gripping, localizing and human–robot interaction and also having artificial superintelligence, the hypothetical AI that surpasses human intelligence and abilities.

Originality/value

It is concluded that advanced technologies that AI are, will help librarians to open up new horizons and solve challenges that crop up in library service delivery.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the transformative potential of integrating artificial intelligence (AI) and the metaverse into academic libraries, envisioning a future where personalized, immersive and accessible user experiences redefine the traditional concept of libraries. The purpose is to analyse the synergy between AI and the metaverse in enhancing library services and user interactions.

Design/methodology/approach

The study uses a literature review approach to synthesize current knowledge on AI, the metaverse and their integration into academic libraries. It delves into the functionalities of AI in cataloguing, personalization and predictive analysis, coupled with the immersive experiences offered by the metaverse. The design envisions metaverse-infused academic libraries as digital spaces hosting AI-driven virtual assistants, personalized learning paths and collaborative environments.

Findings

The integration of AI and the metaverse in academic libraries presents opportunities for personalized learning experiences, efficient resource management and global collaboration. The findings suggest that the synergy enhances accessibility, inclusivity and efficiency in library services, albeit with challenges such as the digital divide, privacy concerns and technical complexities.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the discourse on the future of academic libraries by proposing a comprehensive vision of metaverse-infused libraries empowered by AI. It underscores the originality and value of the integration, emphasizing the potential for personalized, interactive and globally accessible learning and research environments.

Abstract

Purpose

This research aims to analyse the current state of research on the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in libraries by examining document type, publication year, keywords, country and research methods. The overarching aim is to enrich the existing knowledge of AI-powered libraries by identifying the prevailing research gaps, providing direction for future research and deepening the understanding needed for effective policy development.

Design/methodology/approach

This study used advanced tools such as bibliometric and network analysis, taking the existing literature from the SCOPUS database extending to the year 2022. This study analysed the application of AI in libraries by identifying and selecting relevant keywords, extracting the data from the database, processing the data using advanced bibliometric visualisation tools and presenting and discussing the results. For this comprehensive research, the search strategy was approved by a panel of computer scientists and librarians.

Findings

The majority of research concerning the application of AI in libraries has been conducted in the last three years, likely driven by the fourth industrial revolution. Results show that highly cited articles were published by Emerald Group Holdings Ltd. However, the application of AI in libraries is a developing field, and the study highlights the need for more research in areas such as Digital Humanities, Machine Learning, Robotics, Data Mining and Big Data in Academic Libraries.

Research limitations/implications

This study has excluded papers written in languages other than English that address domains beyond libraries, such as medicine, health, education, science and technology.

Practical implications

This article offers insight for managers and policymakers looking to implement AI in libraries. By identifying clusters and themes, the article would empower managers to plan ahead, mitigate potential drawbacks and seize opportunities for sustainable growth.

Originality/value

Previous studies on the application of AI in libraries have taken a broad approach, but this study narrows its focus to research published explicitly in Library and Information Science (LIS) journals. This makes it unique compared to previous research in the field.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate artificial intelligence (AI) as enabler of future library services, with consideration to how prepared are librarians in African university libraries.

Design/methodology/approach

This study applied the interpretive content/document analysis of literature harvested from different databases of Scopus and Web of Science. AI could be used to perform daily routines in circulation, serial, reference and selective dissemination of information among others. It could also be applied to the provision of innovative services of recognition of library activities such as answering research quarries, cataloguing and classification of library materials and management of library system software of different databases within the library systems.

Findings

It could be deduced from the study that AI would continue to serve as a panacea to future library services irrespective of its geographical context. Due to the evolving nature of knowledge growth, AI having its roots in the field of engineering has been found useful to support future library services. The support accrued from library service delivery in the library profession has made librarians continue to interact with other intelligent machines that can demonstrate human behaviour even though they are not real human beings. The behaviour of machines and AI where human beings play a significant role has brought many renovations in the management of complex tasks of processing, communication, knowledge representation, decision making and suggestions, on potentials of diverse work operations.

Practical implications

The understanding that the present paper portrays in the context of future library services is that there is no way the AI could function without a human interaction perspective when drawing an analogy from computer science, information science and information systems fields of study.

Social implications

The interest of users across their background would be strengthen if AI advances transformed the handling complex tasks of processing, communication, knowledge representation, decision-making and giving suggestions, among other things. The possibilities of diverse work operations from empirical evidence of studies consulted in recent times gave the authors the impetus to consider AI as the enabler of future library services.

Originality/value

The increasing demands from library patrons have prompted librarians to adapt their methods of delivering services. These emerging technologies have also brought about shifts in approaches to teaching and learning. Consequently, the recent surge in digital technology-driven service innovations has ushered in a fresh paradigm for education and research. In response to these changes, librarians are actively seeking novel and innovative technologies to enhance user experiences within their libraries. They serve as catalysts for introducing modern and advanced technologies, consistently adapting to contemporary tools that enhance their offerings.

Abstract

Purpose

This study sought to analyze the correlation between artificial intelligence (AI) and libraries and examine whether there were any shifts in research trends related to these two topics during the coronavirus pandemic.

Design/methodology/approach

The study gathered secondary data from the Scopus website using the keywords “AI,” “libraryand “repository,” from 1993 to 2022. Data were re-analyzed using the bibliometric software VOSviewer to examine the trending country's keyword relations and appearance and Biblioshiny to study the publication metadata.

Findings

Index keywords, such as “human,” “deep learning,” “machine learning,” “surveys” and “open-source software,” became popular during 2020, being closely related to digital libraries. Additionally, the annual scientific production of papers increased significantly in 2021. Words related to data mining also had the most significant growth from 2019 to 2022 because of the importance of data mining for library services during the pandemic.

Practical implications

This study provides insight for librarians for the implementation of AI to support repositories during the pandemic. Librarians can learn how to maximize the AI-based repository services in academic libraries during the pandemic. Furthermore, academic libraries can create policies for repository services using AI.

Social implications

This study can lead researchers, academicians and practitioners in conducting research on AI in library repositories.

Originality/value

As research on AI and digital repositories remains limited, the study identifies themes and highlights the knowledge gap existing in the field.
