Abstract
Established ideas of British workers cannot be altered simply by presenting them with the facts about co‐operatives, particularly when some of these facts appear to strip away hard‐earned privileges. The suggestion that co‐operative formation should only be pursued when there is a suitable workforce is one solution, though this is to guarantee that co‐operatives will never grow into a sizeable sector of our economy. The case of the Scott Bader takeover of Synthetic Resins Limited in Liverpool (1982) illustrates clearly a clash between the co‐operative ideal and the conventionally managed, traditionally unionised British norm. The confrontation of trade unions and co‐operatives in such circumstances, in the absence of guidelines, will see ensuing conflict; positive results from such conflict are unlikely as both sides will be talking a different language.

Scott Bader Company Limited is a medium sized chemical company manufacturing products for the plastics industry. It is known world‐wide for its development of glass fibre reinforced plastics, and is one of the largest manufacturers of unsaturated polyester resins for that industry. In 1975 it received the Queen's Award for technological innovation. Were it not for the fact that the extensive laboratories, offices and factory are situated in and around a lovely 18th century manor house in a small Northamptonshire village, it looks outwardly like any other chemical company. And yet whenever people speak about participation, common ownership or democracy in industry, sooner or later they will mention Scott Bader. Its world‐wide reputation for the social experiment it has been engaged in for a quarter of a century is at least as well known as its business activities.

“All things are in a constant state of change”, said Heraclitus of Ephesus. The waters if a river are for ever changing yet the river endures. Every particle of matter is in continual movement. All death is birth in a new form, all birth the death of the previous form. The seasons come and go. The myth of our own John Barleycorn, buried in the ground, yet resurrected in the Spring, has close parallels with the fertility rites of Greece and the Near East such as those of Hyacinthas, Hylas, Adonis and Dionysus, of Osiris the Egyptian deity, and Mondamin the Red Indian maize‐god. Indeed, the ritual and myth of Attis, born of a virgin, killed and resurrected on the third day, undoubtedly had a strong influence on Christianity.

Abstract
This chapter explores Christian wisdom in peacemaking, with particular reference to the experience of Christian International Peace Service (CHIPS). It expounds on the fundamentals of the Servant Leadership model and then draws these two strands together into the realm of business, with examples of how they are relevant in a commercial setting. This research can be aligned with principles of ‘participatory action research’, in so far as the author has been part of the community of practice generated by and informing the work of CHIPS in a range of peacemaking activities. Although CHIPS never makes claims to have made peace, it has proven beyond doubt that teams of Christians living humbly in the tension area, employing Biblical principles in peace-making and Servant Leadership, are incredibly effective in contributing to peace. Furthermore, the successful employment of servant leadership and peacemaking principles within commercial settings are illustrated through three business examples.
