Abstract

Purpose

The study specifically seeks to comprehend the impact of online corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives on consumer behaviour, with a focus on Generation Y consumers. It also aims to examine how, particularly within Ghanaian manufacturing firms, the views of Generation Y consumers regarding digital social responsibility (DSR), and how it moderates the relationship between brand loyalty and purchase intention.

Design/methodology/approach

This study takes a quantitative approach, using information gathered via a survey questionnaire from 611 Generation Y consumers in Ghana. Examining the connections between DSR, customer engagement, brand loyalty and purchase intention is the main goal of the investigation. Structural equation modelling (SEM) methods are used in the study to examine the data gathered and verify the proposed linkages.

Findings

The study reveals a strong positive relationship between corporate social responsibility (DSR) and purchase intention, mediated by consumer engagement and brand loyalty. However, it does not suggest Generation Y's attitudes towards DSR moderating this relationship. The study underscores the importance of DSR for Ghanaian manufacturing businesses.

Originality/value

By studying the relatively unexplored idea of DSR and its effects on consumer behaviour in developing nations – especially in the context of Ghanaian manufacturing enterprises – this study adds to the body of current work. This study sheds light on the ways in which DSR affects Generation Y customers' intentions to buy by examining the mediating roles of brand loyalty and consumer engagement.

Abstract

Purpose

It is observed that bank transactions are at the top of the list as consumers' online transactions increase day by day. We assume that creating an emotion-rich experience will be more effective in ensuring brand awareness, brand associations, perceived quality and brand loyalty, which affect the creation of consumer-based brand value. In this study, it is aimed to determine the relationship of the emotional brand experiences of internet banking users in the brands they use on creating consumer-based brand equity.

Design/methodology/approach

The data in the answers of 484 participants among the 504 people who filled out the questionnaire on social media with the snowball sampling method and were determined to have consistent answers and stating that they used internet banking, were analyzed by SPSS and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM).

Findings

The emotional experiences of internet banking users in Turkey with the internet brand they use have a relationship on all four dimensions (brand awareness, brand loyalty, brand associations and perceived quality) that make up consumer-based brand equity. In this study, the relationship was determined as brand awareness, brand loyalty, perceived quality and brand associations, respectively. The dimensions of the relationship of internet banking users emotional brand experience and consumer-based brand equity were supported.

Research limitations/implications

The research was carried out with internet banking users in Turkey. The results of this research can be compared with studies to be conducted in different countries and with different product brands. In addition, the level of contribution can be increased by investigating the emotional brand experience by comparing positive and negative emotions.

Practical implications

As online connection allowing instant access to unrecognized places and being able to reach brands from long distances instantly makes the emotional experience that can create emotional attachment between the brand and the customer, and brand awareness, brand loyalty, brand association and perceived quality, which are the dimensions of consumer-based brand equity affected by emotional experience, much more important. This importance is increasing day by day as the positive emotional experience to be created in banking services is directly related to access to money. Banking transactions are generally considered as cognitive transactions, and decisions are made and implemented within a cognitive context. However, the findings of this research suggest that decisions should be made and implemented that will enable consumers to gain experiences that can affect their emotions as well as their cognition.

Originality/value

Considering the importance of strategies and tactics that prioritize the creation of consumer-based brand equity in marketing theory, the importance of adding emotional brand experience to these strategies and tactics is supported by the results of this research as originality value. Although the effect of brand experience on consumer-based brand value has been widely researched in the literature, the fact that the effect of brand experience, especially emotional brand experience, on consumer-based brand experience in internet banking transactions has not been sufficiently researched and that this effect has been investigated specifically for Turkey, unlike the literature, increases the original contribution of the research.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to discern and refine the role of emotional intelligence (EI) in the development of customer orientation among banking employees in Morocco. This analysis seeks to enhance understanding about the significance of this emotional skill within the Moroccan banking sector.

Design/methodology/approach

The research embraces an interpretivist philosophical perspective to gain insight into the subjective meanings and experiences of study participants. The methodology employed is qualitative, involving data collected from semi-structured interviews conducted with 21 front-office bank employees. The analysis of the data was conducted through employing thematic analysis.

Findings

The findings of this study conclude that emotional intelligence fosters and stimulates customer orientation for bank employees. The perception, understanding and effective management of emotions – both those of the contact personnel and their customers – enable employees to better comprehend customer reactions. They experience heightened empathy through the impact of accumulated professional experience, adapt their behaviors according to the emotional state of the customer, maintain a positive relationship with them and ultimately gain their confidence.

Originality/value

This study offers clear theoretical explanations and conceptualizations that have identified and linked pertinent literature on the topic. It focuses on a salient subject, investigating how emotional intelligence influences the customer-oriented behavior of front-office bank employees. Notably, this study represents one of the first attempts to explore this relationship within the Moroccan context. As a result, it contributes to the enhancement of managerial practices and human resource policies, thereby fostering a more productive and harmonious working environment.

Abstract

Purpose

This conceptual article provides a basis for designing leader development programs that assess and train leaders to recognize demands for communication and how their personality affects the ways they transmit information, influence others and form positive relationships.

Design/methodology/approach

Adult attachment theory, Big Five personality dimensions (extraversion, conscientiousness, agreeableness, openness to experience and neuroticism) and pro-social and social sensitivity personality traits are proposed to shape the extent to which leaders enact relational, transmission and manipulative models of communication. These personality dimensions and communication models are the basis for assessment and training leaders to use in-person and various electronic media in ways that promote listeners’ attention, understanding and psychological safety.

Findings

Secure attachment leaders who are extraverted, prosocial and socially sensitive are proposed to use high touch media to communicate in ways that establish positive relationships. Avoidant and anxious attachment leaders use low-touch media that are manipulative or mitigate accountability.

Practical implications

The behaviors associated with transmitting information, influencing others and forming relationships can be a basis for assessing leaders’ attachment styles. Leaders can learn to diagnose situations to determine the best mixes of communication models to meet the demands of the situation.

Originality/value

Leaders who are promoted to higher levels of responsibility need to learn how to communicate with multiple stakeholders often during times of challenge and stress. How they communicate is likely to be a function of their comfort with interpersonal relationships, which in turn affects their use of personal and impersonal media.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper explores the motivating factors that lead to opportunity recognition among social entrepreneurs in India.

Design/methodology/approach

The study followed an exploratory, qualitative design based on thematic analysis of the interview data collected from 13 Indian social entrepreneurs.

Findings

The study identifies two aggregate factors that motivate social entrepreneurs: personal and contextual. Personal factors include life experiences, social awareness, social inclination since childhood, spiritual motives, the need for a meaningful career and entrepreneurial intention. Contextual factors included institutional voids, community development, the presence of a role model and volunteer experiences.

Research limitations/implications

This study contributes to the social entrepreneurship literature by providing a model for motivating factors that lead to opportunity recognition. This study enables policymakers and social entrepreneurship educators to identify aspiring social entrepreneurs and provide target-specific support to them.

Practical implications

This study enables policymakers and social entrepreneurship educators to identify aspiring social entrepreneurs and provide target-specific support to them.

Originality/value

The study uniquely contributes to the social entrepreneurship field by offering deep qualitative insights into the motivational and opportunity recognition patterns of social entrepreneurship.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper investigates how the engagement of a group of actors (the volunteers), previously unexplored in service ecosystems literature, contributes to generating new co-creation activities and well-being outcomes in the healthcare service ecosystem (HSE). Moreover, the study analyses how the provision and integration of volunteers’ resources help to explain the HSE self-adjustment favouring the re-humanisation of service.

Design/methodology/approach

The article zooms in on the volunteers’ activities in an HSE. A qualitative approach is adopted, and an empirical investigation is grounded in data gathered from Kids Kicking Cancer (KKC) Italia, a volunteer association operating in the paediatric oncology ward of Italian hospitals. Data are collected and triangulated through in-depth interviews, volunteers’ diaries and observations. The analysis is conducted by adopting an interpretative thematic analysis technique.

Findings

The study provides a conceptual framework explaining how volunteers’ value co-creation activities influence the HSE’s self-adjustment by leading to a re-humanisation of services. The paper also contributes to the state of knowledge by identifying seven categories of volunteers’ value co-creation activities, two of which are completely new in the literature (co-responsibility and empowerment).

Originality/value

The paper contributes to the service research literature by identifying empirically grounded value co-creation activities extending the understanding of self-adjustment and re-humanisation of the service ecosystem.

Abstract

Purpose

This study explores the relationships between corporate board characteristics (CBCs) and corporate social responsibility budget (CSRB) of selected Bangladeshi banks. CSRB was regarded as the sole dependent variable. In contrast, CBCs was separated into three independent constructs: board members' age (BMA), board members’ educational level (BMEL) and the number of board meetings per year (NBMY). A single moderator, corporate reputation (CR), was used to assess the moderating impact on the direct relationships.

Design/methodology/approach

Annual reports from 2017 to 2021 (5 years) of 25 selectively listed Bangladeshi banks were used as study samples. Further, the researcher conducted informal interviews with 251 board members of those selected banks using a semi-structured questionnaire. The study used “multiple regression analysis” to evaluate the moderating effects on the three direct relationships and “Pearson's correlation coefficient” to assess the immediate impacts.

Findings

After analysis, the results revealed that all the three independent components, BMA, BMEL and NBMY, have substantial positive relationships with the dependent variable, CSRB. Moreover, it was identified that CR can moderate (strengthen) all the three direct relationships. 

Originality/value

Corporate governance (CG) and CSR are two hot topics both in academia and practice. This study highlighted the corporate board characteristics and CSR budget, two new dimensions of CG literature that are required to be paid more attention to. The researcher expects this study to enhance the literature focused on these newer dimensions of CG that might benefit both academics and practitioners.

Abstract

Purpose

In developing nations, the utility and intention to use algorithmic trading (AT) platforms and financial services are predominantly reliant on investors’ technological knowledge. This study aims to investigate the effect of investor awareness of AT (AAT), trust in AT (TAT) and acceptance of innovativeness (AOI) on intention to use the AT (IUAT) platforms among Indian investors.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors used a structured questionnaire with a five-point Likert scale to collect the data from 392 Indian retail investors through a purposeful sampling approach. And, the authors carried out structural equation modelling to analyse the serial mediation among the latent (independent) and observed (dependent) variables.

Findings

The findings suggest that investor awareness exerts a statistically significant and positive effect on the IUAT platforms. Additionally, TAT platforms and innovation acceptance, independently as well as mediator, significantly influences the usage decision of AT platforms among Indian investors.

Research limitations/implications

The findings on determinants of AT platform usage can guide investment regulators to promote technological awareness, build trust and provide a safe algorithmic trading environment for retail investors in India. The suggestions may take the edge off a few behavioural impediments among the investors w.r.t. AT platform usage.

Originality/value

Off the back of extensive literary exploration our field research is among the first that probes an intellectual discourse and documents the empirical evidence on linkages between investor AAT, TAT, AOI and the IUAT platforms in the Indian stock market.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this research is to develop an enhanced understanding of the drivers of trust and loyalty in a conventional and Islamic banking setting.

Design/methodology/approach

The study’s sample included South African retail bank customers who had Islamic or conventional products and who were 18 years or older. A field services company collected data from respondents through the distribution of self-administered questionnaires and a total of 949 questionnaires were deemed suitable for data analysis. SmartPLS 3.2.7 and Hayes Process Macro for SPSS tested the study’s hypotheses.

Findings

Comparing conventional banking customers with Islamic banking customers, the path from trust to customer loyalty was statistically significantly different across customer type, while the paths between trust and customer orientation, information sharing, and service fairness were not statistically significantly different across customer type. A closer examination of the path coefficients reveals that the relationship between trust and loyalty is stronger for conventional banking customers than for Islamic banking customers.

Practical implications

The findings of the study guide both conventional and Islamic banks in South Africa on how banks should redesign their purpose as the providers of financial resources to their customer segments. It highlights the need for these banks to secure a more focused approach on how to deliver financial resources and consulting services to customers in a trusting, engaging and reliable manner.

Originality/value

The study provides insight into Islamic and retail bank customers’ perceptions of the drivers of trust and loyalty and how these constructs’ interrelationships differ between Islamic and conventional banking customers.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to articulate how the user experience (UX) approach was initiated and integrated into the centre’s scope of operations with the objective of improving the e-learning layout on the D2L learning management system (LMS). One of the most effective ways to collect user feedback has historically been to evaluate user interfaces using strategies from user testing. The integration of a UX approach by the Centre for ODL Experiences (COLE) at Wawasan Open University has led to a more user-oriented design of FlexLearn by conducting user testing on students as the target users of the platform and gathering course leaders’ (CLs) feedback after the presentation of the new template.

Design/methodology/approach

Since the process of design and development is a looping process, the first user testing methods employed were observation and interviews, which were conducted over the course of numerous sessions. The data collection used a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative demographic and background data with qualitative feedback from open-ended questions and real-time interview responses. A standardized questionnaire gathered demographic information, while questions for feedback forms and interviews were adjusted based on specific tasks to explore usability and user interactions comprehensively.

Findings

The findings revealed overall positive feedback, with some concerns highlighted by the students who claimed to have trouble navigating the courses during the initial prototype. In addition to the qualitative data from the user testing session, a quantitative method based on an online questionnaire was also utilised for the CLs after the presentation of the final layout. Positive responses were received from the CLs, and constructive suggestions were considered for FlexLearn 3.0.

Research limitations/implications

This paper is among the first that articulates the process of initiating and integrating user-centred design in an effort to improve the user experience of online and ODL platforms and LMSs. It will contribute to a dialogue on investigating and prioritising learners’ ODL experiences to ensure education equity across all levels or categories of students, which aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Practical implications

The integration of UX and user testing allows us to better identify what users like, their concerns and their needs. We gain important input on how easy or difficult it is to use the system, move around it and how much they enjoy using it. This feedback helps us make changes to the design so that the final product is more in line with what users want. It also allows us to discover problems before they become major, saving time and effort later on. Finally, integrating user input improves the LMS, delivering a more fun and successful learning experience for everyone.

Social implications

User-friendly systems arise as institutions prioritise user-centred design, breaking down barriers for various learners. This develops an innovative culture, improving present learning experiences and setting a precedent for future generations. The emphasis on user demands helps to create a more accessible, adaptive and egalitarian educational landscape by connecting education with current technological trends. As education becomes more inclusive, the broader community benefits, emphasising the beneficial social impact of LMS user testing.

Originality/value

By articulating the process of integrating user testing on an LMS/e-learning prototype, helps us understand what users like, where they face problems and what needs improvement. By involving users in testing, we get valuable feedback on how easy it is to use the system, navigate around and overall, how much they enjoy using it. Case studies like this also offer universities concrete examples of real-world challenges and successes.
