Abstract

Purpose

The step effect and support structure generated by the manufacturing process of fused deposition molding parts increase the consumables cost and decrease the printing quality. Multiorientation printing helps improve the surface quality of parts and reduce support, but path interference exists between the printing layer and the layers printed. The purpose of this study is to design printing paths between different submodels to avoid interference when build orientation changed.

Design/methodology/approach

Considering support constraint, build orientation sequence is designed for submodels decomposed by model topology. The minimum printing angle between printing layers is analyzed. Initial path through the oriented bounding box is planned and slice interference relationship is then detected according to the projection topology mapping. Based on the relationship matrix of multiorientation slice, feasible path is calculated by directed graph (DG). Final printing path is determined under support constraint and checked by minimum printing angle. The simulation model of the robotic arm is established to verify the accessibility of printing path under the constraint of support and slice.

Findings

The proposed method can reduce support structure, decrease volume error and effectively solve the interference problem of the printing path for multiorientation slice.

Originality/value

The method based on projection topology mapping greatly improves the efficiency of interference detection. A feasible path calculated through DGs ensures the effectiveness of the printing path with the constraint of support and slice.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the current manuscript is to investigate the reflection of plane waves in a rotating, two-dimensional homogeneous, initially stressed, nonlocal orthotropic thermoelastic solid half-space based on dual-phase-lag model.

Design/methodology/approach

The reflection phenomenon has been utilized to study the effects of initial stress, rotation and nonlocal parameter on the amplitude ratios. During the reflection phenomenon three coupled waves, namely quasi displacement primary wave (qP), quasi thermal wave (qT) and quasi displacement secondary wave (qSV) have been observed in the medium, propagating with distinct velocities. After imposing the suitable boundary conditions, amplitude and energy ratios of the reflected waves are obtained in explicit form.

Findings

With the support of MATLAB programming, the amplitude ratios and energy ratios are plotted graphically to display the effects of rotation, initial stress and nonlocal parameters. Moreover, the impact of anisotropy and phase lags is also observed on the reflection coefficients of the propagating waves.

Originality/value

In the current work, we have considered rotation and nonlocality parameters in an initially stressed orthotropic thermoelastic half-space, which is lacking in the published literature in this field. The introduction of these parameters in a nonlocal orthotropic thermoelastic medium provides a more realistic model for these studies. The present work is valuable for the analysis of orthotropic thermoelastic problems involving rotation, initial stress and nonlocality parameters.

Abstract

Purpose

Motivated by recent research indicating the significant challenges posed by imbalanced datasets in industrial settings, this paper presents a novel framework for Industrial Data-driven Modeling for Imbalanced Fault Diagnosis, aiming to improve fault detection accuracy and reliability.

Design/methodology/approach

This study addressing the challenge of imbalanced datasets in predicting hard drive failures is both innovative and comprehensive. By integrating data enhancement techniques with cost-sensitive methods, the research pioneers a solution that directly targets the intrinsic issues posed by imbalanced data, a common obstacle in predictive maintenance and reliability analysis.

Findings

In real industrial environments, there is a critical demand for addressing the issue of imbalanced datasets. When faced with limited data for rare events or a heavily skewed distribution of categories, it becomes essential for models to effectively mine insights from the original imbalanced dataset. This involves employing techniques like data augmentation to generate new insights and rules, enhancing the model’s ability to accurately identify and predict failures.

Originality/value

Previous research has highlighted the complexity of diagnosing faults within imbalanced industrial datasets, often leading to suboptimal predictive accuracy. This paper bridges this gap by introducing a robust framework for Industrial Data-driven Modeling for Imbalanced Fault Diagnosis. It combines data enhancement and cost-sensitive methods to effectively manage the challenges posed by imbalanced datasets, further innovating with a bagging method to refine model optimization. The validation of the proposed approach demonstrates superior accuracy compared to existing methods, showcasing its potential to significantly improve fault diagnosis in industrial applications.

Abstract

Purpose

Engaging suppliers in joint innovation can be an effective means for buyer firms to overcome internal resource/capability limitations. The purpose of this research is to investigate the impacts of cultural and trust congruences between the supplier and buyer firms on joint innovation. In addition, we examine the relationship commitment as an antecedent of cultural and trust congruences.

Design/methodology/approach

The study constructs a theoretical model based on social exchange theory (SET) and examines it using data from Chinese manufacturing firms.

Findings

The results suggest that cultural and trust congruences between suppliers and buyers positively influence joint processes and product innovations. Furthermore, we find that while normative relationship commitments of supplier firms promote cultural and trust congruences with buyers, instrumental relationship commitments only positively affect trust congruence.

Originality/value

This study enhances our understanding of social exchanges by adopting a dyadic view to examine the interconnectedness between relationship commitment, cultural and trust congruences, and joint innovation. These findings also offer practical managerial implications for managing collaborative innovation projects.

Abstract

Purpose

Fitness games, as a medium that combines playfulness and usefulness for exercise, face challenges in sustaining long-term user engagement. Currently, there is limited research exploring factors influencing users' continued intention to use from the perspective of user experience. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the priority of various user experience attributes of fitness games in promoting users' sustained engagement and to construct a user behavior model, offering theoretical guidance for designers and businesses.

Design/methodology/approach

This study distributed 441 survey questionnaires and, based on the fundamental characteristics of external games, established a model for users' continued intention to use external games. It explores the impact of various gaming elements on users' continued intention to use fitness games and the relationships between these elements.

Findings

The study indicates that usefulness, functional quality, and ease of use directly influence players' intention to continue playing external games. Social interactions, technical quality, and playfulness do not have an impact on the continued intention to use.

Originality/value

This research breaks away from the bias of previous studies overly focusing on playfulness in games. It fills the research gap regarding the continued intention to use fitness games and provides insights into the design and operation of fitness games.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to review the literature on Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs) in light of the increasing demand for digital payments globally. It aims to assess the global research landscape, methodologies and data utilized in CBDC studies as their popularity grows.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper employs a systematic literature review (SLR) framework, utilizing the Scopus database to identify 323 studies related to Central Bank Digital Currency or CBDC. Through a thorough manual screening process, 169 studies were selected for inclusion. The research employs R, Biblioshiny and Excel for data evaluation, classifying the studies into three methodological categories: quantitative, qualitative and mixed approaches. This classification allows for a detailed assessment of the research techniques and data used in the literature on CBDCs.

Findings

The findings include a diverse range of research methodologies and data employed in CBDCs literature, highlighting the growing interest and depth of academic investigation into this area. By categorizing papers according to research technique, the study provides a comprehensive evaluation of the academic landscape regarding CBDC research. It offers valuable insights for researchers, policymakers and stakeholders, contributing to an enhanced understanding of the complexities and opportunities presented by the development and implementation of CBDCs.

Originality/value

This study’s originality lies in its rigorous and transparent methodology for data from CBDC studies, offering a solid framework for future research. By evaluating global research growth within an SLR framework and categorizing studies by research technique, it contributes uniquely to the academic discourse on digital currencies. The paper provides a critical resource for researchers, lawmakers and stakeholders, enriching the knowledge base on CBDCs and supporting informed decision-making in the context of digital financial innovation.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to assess the influence of institutional quality (IQ), fossil fuel efficiency, structural change and renewable energy (RE) consumption on carbon efficiency.

Design/methodology/approach

This research uses an econometric approach, more specifically the Autoregressive Distributed Lag model, to examine the relationship between structural change, RE consumption, IQ, fossil fuel efficiency and carbon efficiency in India from 1996 to 2019.

Findings

This study finds the positive contributions of variables like fossil fuel efficiency, technological advancement, structural transformation, IQ and increased RE consumption in fostering environmental development through enhanced carbon efficiency. Conversely, this study emphasises the negative contribution of trade openness on carbon efficiency. These findings provide concise insights into the dynamics of factors impacting carbon efficiency in India.

Research limitations/implications

This study's exclusive focus on India limits the generalizability of findings. Future studies should include a broader range of variables impacting various nations' carbon efficiency. Furthermore, it is worth noting that this study examines renewable and fossil fuel efficiency aggregated. Future research endeavours could yield more specific policy insights by conducting analyses at a disaggregated level, considering individual energy sources such as wind, solar, coal and oil. Understanding how the efficiency of each energy source influences carbon efficiency could lead to more targeted and practical policy recommendations.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study addresses a significant gap in the existing literature by being the first empirical investigation into the effects of IQ, fossil fuel efficiency, structural change and RE consumption on carbon efficiency. Unlike prior research, the authors consider a comprehensive IQ index, providing a more holistic perspective. The use of a comprehensive composite index for IQ, coupled with the focus on fossil fuel efficiency and structural change, distinguishes this study from previous research, contributing valuable insights into the intricate dynamics shaping India's path towards enhanced carbon efficiency, an area relatively underexplored in the existing literature.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the effect of sandwich-generation caregiving (caregiving for elders and children simultaneously) on employed caregivers’ job satisfaction when compared with non-sandwich caregiving patterns of no caregiving, children-only caregiving and elders-only caregiving. This study also aims to explore whether depression mediates this effect and whether three types of caregivers-friendly work time (less work-time length, less nonstandard work-time schedule and more work-time autonomy) buffer these direct and indirect effects.

Design/methodology/approach

A sample of 7,571 Chinese employees is chosen from the 2020 China Family Panel Studies through a multistage stratified sampling design.

Findings

After controlling for employees’ sociodemographic, work and other caregiving characteristics, this study finds that sandwich-generation caregiving is indeed more likely to negatively affect employees’ job satisfaction when compared with no caregiving and elders-only caregiving, but to the same extent as children-only caregiving. This study also suggests that the effect of sandwich-generation caregiving on job satisfaction is mediated by employees’ depression and that three types of caregiver-friendly work time help to weaken the negative effects on employees’ depression and job satisfaction.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study to explore the negative spillover effect and its mechanisms of caregiving on employees’ job satisfaction through focusing on a special caregivers group: employed sandwich-generation caregivers. These results shed light on the importance of extending caregiver studies to the workplace and provide implications for organization managers and human resources practitioners to design caregiver-friendly workplace policies to maintain employed caregivers’ work-family balance.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to introduce a custom-designed integrated nucleic acid detection polymerase chain reaction (PCR) instrument for clinical detection applications.

Design/methodology/approach

The PCR instrument can make rapid, sensitive, low-cost and quantitative molecular diagnosis compared with the current routine test flow from the pipette, series reagent to RT-PCR by manual manipulation. By integrating the multichannel automatic pipetting module, heat amplification module and real-time fluorescence detection module for the first time, the custom-designed integrated nucleic acid detection PCR instrument can achieve sample collection, subpackage, mixing, extracting, measuring and result presentation.

Findings

The multichannel automatic pipetting module was assembled with an accuracy of 0.4% (2 microliters) for accuracy measurement. Besides, the accuracy and sensitivity of nucleic acid using integrated low-cost nucleic acid detection PCR instruments were checked with COV-2019 virus (staining method) and African swine fever virus (probe method) under different concentrations.

Practical implications

Because of its high cost, complex system and bulky laboratory settings, including sample subpackage, mixing, extracting, measuring and finally result in presentation, the current nucleic acid detection system is not suitable for field operation and disease diagnosis in remote areas. The group independently designed and assembled an integrated low-cost multichannel nucleic acid detection PCR instrument, including a multichannel automatic pipetting module, a heat amplification module and a real-time fluorescence detection module.

Originality/value

The above equipment showed better reliability compared with commercial qPCR. These results can lay the foundation for functional, fast and low-cost PCR equipment for trace measurements.

Abstract

Purpose

Recent trends have shown the integration of Chinese word segmentation (CWS) and part-of-speech (POS) tagging to enhance syntactic and semantic parsing. However, the potential utility of hierarchical and structural information in these tasks remains underexplored. This study aims to leverage multiple external knowledge sources (e.g. syntactic and semantic features, lexicons) through various modules for the joint task.

Design/methodology/approach

We introduce a novel learning framework for the joint CWS and POS tagging task, utilizing graph convolutional networks (GCNs) to encode syntactic structure and semantic features. The framework also incorporates a pre-defined lexicon through a lexicon attention module. We evaluate our model on a range of public corpora, including CTB5, PKU and UD, the novel ZX dataset and the comprehensive CTB9 dataset.

Findings

Experimental results on these benchmark corpora demonstrate the effectiveness of our model in improving the performance of the joint task. Notably, we find that syntax information significantly enhances performance, while lexicon information helps mitigate the issue of out-of-vocabulary (OOV) words.

Originality/value

This study introduces a comprehensive approach to the joint CWS and POS tagging task by combining multiple features. Moreover, the proposed framework offers potential adaptability to other sequence labeling tasks, such as named entity recognition (NER).
