Editorial

Dear Reader of Soldering & Surface Mount Technology (SSMT), I want to use this short editorial to inform you that there has been a change of editor for the journal and that, beginning with this issue I, Martin Goosey, have taken over the role. After editing this Journal for a number of years, David Whalley, has now stepped down from the position and I am delighted to be have been asked to become the new editor. I hope to be able to continue the good work that David has done to make SSMT the leading journal in the sector.

Having worked in the field of electronics interconnection and assembly for much of my 30 plus years' industrial career, SSMT has always covered many aspects of my own technology interests and thus it is with great pleasure that I have become more involved with the journal. Also, as Industrial Director of the Innovative Electronics Manufacturing Research Centre (IeMRC) at Loughborough University, there is a strong synergy between my work with the IeMRC and the type of material covered by the journal. This issue contains a short overview of the IeMRC and its research activities and I hope to be able to bring you more specific and detailed information on the specific programmes being supported by the IeMRC in future issues.

Having been Editor of SSMT's sister journal, Circuit World, for a number years, I am always aware that, no matter how good things appear to be, there is always room for further improvement. It is therefore my intention to reduce the time it takes to publish papers when they have been submitted to SSMT. Being such a prestigious journal, we have a very rigorous peer review mechanism in place and, whilst this must be maintained, I am looking at ways to speed up the overall review and revision process. There is currently a healthy supply of papers undergoing review and much interesting material available for publication but we need to be able to bring it to you, the reader, in a more timely manner.

I would like to thank the Editorial Advisory Board and those subject matter experts that already participate in the reviewing process for their hard work. I also invite others to join our team of reviewers. Please feel free to contact me if you would like to participate in this activity. I am also very keen to hear from readers with their views and suggestions regarding the journal and would be pleased to receive your e-mails at m.goosey@lboro.ac.uk. Finally, I look forward to working on SSMT and to helping maintain its position as the leading journal in the field.

Martin GooseyIeMRC Industrial Director, Loughborough University
