Keywords: Electronics industry, Manufacturing industries

During the Nepcon Show in Birmingham UK, Peter Swanson announced this year's SMART Fellow awards.

The SMART Fellowships were first announced at The European Surface Mount Conference held in Brighton back in 1998. SMART Fellowships are awarded to individuals to “thank them for their active participation in the furtherance of the aims of The SMART Group” during the year. The list includes committee members, supporters and sponsors, people who have helped the Group through the media, and those who are aiding the electronics manufacturing industry. The list also includes SMART members who are regular attendees or extraordinary contributors to the association's seminars, forums and events. Since, we began the SMART Fellows, there have been over 60 recipients. The SMART Fellows are voted upon by the Directors of the SMART Group, from a list of nominations suggested by the membership as a whole.

The list for this year is:

  • John Burke – Optichron Inc. John was a founder and officer of the SMART Group. Despite relocating to the USA some years ago he still actively supports the Group and the industry.

  • Frances Coughlan – Kostal Ireland Ltd. Frances is an active and refreshing smart-e-link user and member from Ireland.

  • Roger Deakin – BAE (INSYTE). Roger works on the Isle of Wight, which has not prevented him from being a regular attendee at our events.

  • Ron Gow – DKL Metals Ltd. Ron is a long term member of the SMART Committee in Scotland (Plate 2).

  • Jane Griffin – SMART Group. Jane can be found working hard alongside our secretary Tony Gordon at any major SMART event – she's the pretty one with the welcoming smile.

  • Marion Quarrington – Measurement Technology Ltd. Marion has gained much respect in our forums for her technical skills.

  • Pete Starkey – Starkey Technical Services. Pete, a member of our Technical Committee for many years, is our pcb fab guru both technically and commercially (Plate 3).
