GenRad, Inc. has acquired San Diego, California based Nicolet Imaging Systems (NIS) and its sister company Sierra Research and Technology, Inc. (SRT), based in Westford, Massachusetts, from ThermoSpectra Corporation, a subsidiary of Thermo Instrument Systems, Inc., for a combined purchase price of $40 million. This acquisition expands the range of test solutions GenRad provides to electronics manufacturers to include manual and automated X-ray inspection as well as rework and repair. The expanded product portfolio allows GenRad to offer electronics manufacturers the most extensive closed-loop test and repair solutions available today.

NIS' patented in-line X-ray technology complements GenRad's current end-of-line board test product offerings. X-ray imaging is rapidly becoming the technology of choice for process and structural testing of advanced electronic assemblies. This synergy allows GenRad the opportunity to extend its product offerings by providing distributed test solutions to customers with the GENEVA, TestStation, GR Pilot, GR Versa and GR Viper product ranges.

SRT's integrated rework systems expands GenRad's business into the rework and repair systems market. The rework systems can be linked to GenRad's Test Repair Analysis and Control Solution^TM (TRACS^TM), Shop Floor Line Manager^TM (SFLM^TM) and Shop Floor Data Manager^TM (SFDM^TM), enabling a fully automated repair loop and providing all the associated benefits to the customer.
