At the AGM the SMART Group elected a new chairman, Alan Jones, who takes over from Peter Swanson (Plate 3). The AGM was held prior to a major Lead-Free Seminar attended by 150 delegates.
On his appointment Jones commented:
For the past four years the Smart Group has been managed and directed with great flair and panache by our outgoing chairman Mr Peter Swanson, it is quite a daunting thought to attempt to follow in his footsteps.
On behalf of the Smart Group Steering and Technical Committees, I would like to sincerely thank Peter for all his efforts and hard work which he directed to the task of chairman.

Peter oversaw an unprecedented growth in the Group's membership, two highly successful European Conferences and is personally responsible for our electronic communications such as Smart-e-Link and Web Site. Many thanks Peter.
We are pleased to announce that the Steering Committee has recently concluded a number of sponsorship deals with Reed Exhibition Companies, the results of which will see our continuing involvement with Nepcon Birmingham, Nepcon West in California and Nepcon Ireland in Dublin.
We look forward to meeting as many of our members as possible at these forthcoming exhibitions and take this opportunity to invite you to visit the Smart Group Stands at Birmingham and Dublin.
The Smart Group stands are now being designed as an ideal meeting point for our members and will be advertised and catalogued as "The Smart-Meeting-Point" a most suitable place to meet friends and colleagues.
The Smart Group, with it's five hundred plus member companies, is now stronger than ever and has an exciting future ahead, I look forward to my new position as chairman of the Group and I am very honored and pleased to have been appointed.
