Purpose – Describes the leadership development program that has been developed by Microsoft to ensure that its future leadership will fit into the culture it wishes to develop. Design/methodology/approach – Quotes from senior managers about the aims of the program, the methods it uses to develop leaders with the competences it wants its leaders to have, and how this fits in with the career development and succession planning programs developed at the firm. An inset gives an overview of the trends that are affecting leadership development worldwide. Findings – Describes Microsoft’s approach to leadership development as being engineered to make sure that managers have the training, career planning and work experiences that will enable them to develop the competences identified as necessary for the success of the company.
