Purpose – To present the views of a sample of over 1,000 UK middle managers from the public and private sectors on a range of managerial issues. Design/methodology/approach – Highlights the opinions of Clive Head, loyalty and alliances manager at BP, Ann Hood, head of internal communications, Scottish and Newcastle, Chris Eluwa, deployment manager, Perot Systems, and Cathy Ellingford, children and young people’s lead, at an NHS primary care trust, in relation to their experiences of organizational change, people management, leadership, office politics, corporate culture, and working to quantifiable targets. Findings – Discovers that the majority of managers did not want their bosses job, but would choose to be a manager if they had their time again; cited autonomy as their most important criterion of job satisfaction; critical of all things that curb their ability to determine their own oath such as bureaucracy, unnecessary layers of hierarchy, and initiatives imposed from above with little understanding of organizational repercussions; were not actively seeking promotion; said that one of their most motivating factors was a sense of achievement; and rated their own manager as a good leader. Originality/value – Looks at how seriously UK middle managers take their role and how committed they are to doing a good job.ISSN: 0025-1925Reference: 35AH189
