Non-metallic seal-less pump takes on the challenge of chemicals handling

AxFlow Limited has announced its introduction of a non-metallic seal-less pump featuring an integral synchronous drive. Developed by Wernert-Pumpen for chemical duties, the Taifun 32-200 is a corrosion resistant, ATEX certified pump offering double hermetic sealing. The design of the Taifun 32-300 breaks new ground in that it has overcome the difficulties that double hermetically sealed metallic canned motor pumps have when pumping aggressive fluids. It also overcomes the magnetically coupled centrifugal pump's problems of not being able to conform to the highest safety standards. In developing the pump, designers have addressed the effects that asynchronous eddy currents have on fully PFA lined canned motor pumps. Here, the problem is overheating of the pump lining and the series damage that ensues. The Taifun 32-200 replaces the outer rotor of a magnetic-coupled pump with a special arrangement of coils, thereby creating a pump with an integrated synchronous drive excited by an inner permanent magnetic rotor. The drive allows the provision of large radial gaps for cooling purposes, ideal for non- metallic materials such as silicon carbide and PTFA/PFA. The pump's outer metallic casing is not drilled to accommodate the exit of a drive shaft, so it functions as a second contained casing and forms a double hermetic non-metallic pump. The pump and 13 kW share the same shaft and, therefore, offer a much more compact unit with no need for coupling alignment. “The casing has been given a PFA coating to guard against corrosion,” comments AxFlow managing director Tony Peters. “All other parts and static seals that come into contact with the pumped fluid are manufactured from chemically-resistant materials. The pump is completely gas- tight and has successfully completed long term helium leak tests.” Suitable for pumping highly toxic liquids under hazardous conditions, the ATEX certified Taifun 32-200 operates over a flow range of 1-35 m3/h and up to 80 m head by varying the speed from 60 to 5,000 rpm. The 140 mm diameter impeller is made from high density PTFE and features 3D blades for optimum efficiency. Low noise emission is a feature, as is an NPSH requirement of below 3 m. Once rotation is adjusted (up to 5,000 rpm), the Taifun reaches every working point within its range of performance curves precisely and silently. Trimming of the impeller is no longer required. Supplied as standard with a 13 kW motor, the Taifun 32-200 can be taken from stock, installed and started. One pump suitable for a multitude of duties across a plant could not make life easier.
