In conjunction with the FSCT's 83rd Annual Meeting, the 27th Biennial Western Coatings Societies' Symposium & Show was held for the first time in Las Vegas at the Westin Casuarina Hotel, 7-9 November. Attended by 963 industry personnel and featuring 120 tabletop exhibits, the theme of the event, “Spirit of Cooperation,” reflected the mutually supportive arrangement between the FSCT and the West Coast Societies (Arizona, Golden Gate, Los Angeles, Pacific Northwest, and Rocky Mountain). Featured presentations at the technical program included the Mattiello Lecture, “Bring Back the Steel? The Growth of Plastics in Automotive Applications,” by newly installed FSCT President Dr Rose A. Ryntz, of Visteon, and the Technical Focus Lecture, “Accelerated UV Weathering of Polymeric Systems: Recent Innovations and Perspectives,” by Dr Joannie Chin, of National Institute of Standards and Technology. The FSCT presented its most prestigious award, the George Baugh Heckel Award, to Past-President Thomas E. Hill, of The Coatings Alliance, for his outstanding contributions to the organization. The 2005 President's Award was presented to Dr Raymond Fernando, of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, for his efforts in development of the FSCT's Advancements in Coatings Series in 2005. The John Gordon Best Paper Award for outstanding technical presentation was also made to Jeffrey Quill, William Wurst, and Patrick J. Brennan, of Q-Panel, and John Boisseau and Donald Campbell, of BASF Corp., for their paper on “Accelerated Acid Etch for Automotive Clearcoats: A Joint Research Project Provides Lab & Field Correlation.” Honorable Mentions went to Ahmet Nebioglu and Mark Soucek, of University of Akron, for “Investigation of Properties of UV- Curing Acrylate-Terminated Unsaturated Polyester Coatings,” and to A. Thorn, A. Adams, T. Gichuhi, W. Novelli, and M.A. Sapp, of Halox, for “Improved Corrosion Control Through Non-Toxic Corrosion Inhibitor Synergies.” Preceded by a series of one-day short courses sponsored by the FSCT's Professional Development Committee (Dr Jamil Bagdachi, of Eastern Michigan University, Chair), the joint FSCT/WCS event was overseen by the WCS Organizing Committee composed of Trish Jones (Chair), Air Products & Chemicals, Inc., and Larry Teachout, Behr Process Corp. (Los Angeles); Rick Ryan, MiniFibers, Inc., and Jim Lauria, Team Chemistry, LLC (Golden Gate); Steve Banta and John Berghuis, Kronos Canada (Pacific Northwest); Mike Sylvester, Spectrum Paint Co., and Angela Wallace, Veron Performance Coatings (Arizona); and Rose Ryntz, Visteon, and Gail Pollano, NeoResins (FSCT). On behalf of the FSCT, President Fritz Walker said, “The FSCT deeply appreciates the opportunity to work in collaboration with several of its Constituent Societies in this successful venture.”
