The 2004 International Coatings Expo (ICE) drew 6,596 visitors, the highest attendance total in 3 years, the Federation of Societies for Coatings Technology announced. The event, on 27-29 October in Chicago, attracted visitors from 54 countries, the Federation said. The exhibition featured nearly 330 supplier companies occupying more than 67,000 square feet of space in Chicago's McCormick Place North.

Following the 2004 ICE, the event is converting to a biennial schedule, with the next show scheduled for 27-29 November 2006, in Chicago.

The FSCT also has announced the launch of three conference and tabletop-exhibition programs for 2005:

  • Research Methods in the 21st Century: A Toolkit for Competitive Advantage,” 18-20 May in New Orleans;

  • Nanotechnology in Coatings: Realizing the Potential,” 8-10 June in Seattle; and

  • Coating Wood and Wood Composites: The Changing Future,” 25-27 September, in Charlotte, NC.

Also in 2005, the FSCT will hold its 83rd Annual Meeting in conjunction with the Western Coatings Societies Symposium and Show, scheduled for 6-9 November in Las Vegas.

The FSCT's 2004 International Coatings Technology Conference, held prior to the opening of the ICE, drew 470 participants. Conference topics included formulation, nanotechnology, waterborne-coatings technology, maintenance coatings, and high- throughput methodology.

The Annual Meeting Technical Program offered 80 technical papers, with highlights that included the Mattiello Memorial Lecture, “Challenge 2005 and Beyond: Recognition, Transformation and Profitable Use of Innovative Thinking,” delivered by George R. Pilcher, Akzo Nobel Coatings Inc. Dean C. Webster, North Dakota State University, presented the Technical Focus Lecture on “Radical Change in Research and Development: The Shift from Conventional Methods to High Throughput Methods.”
