New continuous diluter for Insitec system enables online particle sizing in slurries

Keywords: Malvern Process Systems, Particle size measurement

Malvern Process Systems has introduced the new Gulfstream continuous multistage diluter for use in conjunction with its Insitec online particle size analyzers. By providing continuous dilution, the patented Gulfstream extends the application of Insitec systems to include the real-time measurement of particle size analysis of liquid process streams containing high concentration slurries of fine particles (Plate 3).

The Malvern Insitec has been specifically designed for industrial use in challenging environments. It uses laser diffraction technology to accurately and rapidly generate complete particle size data for particles in the size range 0.1-1,000 μm. Requiring no calibration and minimal maintenance, the instrument has a very high reliability.

Insitec L and Insitec W systems, and associated flow cells, are available for wet applications. The Insitec L is suitable for lower flowrates and fine particles whereas the Insitec W with its enclosed flow cell is more suitable for coarser particles and higher flows. The Insitec W additionally has an automated wiper system to combat gradual fouling. Installation of the units can be either in-line for dilute streams or online with appropriate sample conditioning.

The addition of the Gulfstream extends analysis to concentrated liquid systems by providing the continuous dilution of process streams. It is powered solely by the diluent flow, with no moving parts and easy cleaning. Gulfstream uses a simple co-axial venturi/eductor to aspirate and dilute the sample. There is a fixed dilution ratio per stage of 1:5 and as many as five stages can be incorporated in a single unit.

Two software packages, RT sizer and Malvern link, are used with the Insitec to fully automate the entire analytical process (including sampling and any sample conditioning), to present data in the form required by the customer and integrate the analytical system with existing process control platforms. This approach ensures that optimal use is made of the measured data and facilitates the installation of automated control loops. For further details, visit the Web site: www.malps.com
