The Western European Market for Industrial Wood Coatings

Keywords: Coatings, Wood, Europe

IRL has announced the publication of its fifth edition of the report, The Western European Market for Industrial Wood Coatings.

The Western European market for industrial wood coatings is estimated at 377,750 tonnes in 2003 and is characterised by falling markets for nitrocellulose and acid-catalysed finishes but strong growth in water-based and UV-curing types. With the exception of Spain, almost all the national markets have stagnated or declined in recent years, with German demand falling to 45,000 tonnes, making it now the third-largest market after Italy and Spain. Where there is overall growth, it will generally be between 0 and 2 per cent pa depending upon the relative rate of substitution for new technologies; some markets will continue to decline as a result (Figure 2).

In terms of applications, the market divides between furniture, joinery and parquet as shown in Figure 3.

Figure 3 Demand for Wood Finishes by Sector in Western Europe, 2003 (per cent)

The above breakdown reflects the fact that the furniture industry is shrinking, while parquet demand has increased slowly, despite demand for flooring waning overall.

There has been relatively little consolidation in the sector in recent years and stagnation in the market has favoured SMEs. The top four companies share only 40 per cent of the market and beyond these, no other wood coatings producer can account for more than 2 per cent of the market.
