Spencer Coatings, leading manufacturers of protective coatings and decorative paint, are launching a new product which will brighten the world of industrial coatings and boost their sales to the DIY and agricultural sectors.

Last year, Spencer acquired the Bitumastic brand when it bought over pearl paints. This unique enamel product is a highly durable protective coating which has been used to coat ships hulls, pipelines and even the lock gates on the Panama Canal. Bitumastic has many imitators and the name has become a generic term in the paint industry.

Until recently, Bitumastic was only available in black. However, to meet client's demand coloured solutions has been developed. This product is a coloured bitumastic solution to rival smooth hammer finishes. Coloured solutions boasts 18 colours which can be used on agricultural machinery, metal and steelwork and timber. In addition, it can be used for decorative purposes such as gates, railings and, because it is lead-free it is ideal for interior metalwork.

Coloured solutions, which is being relaunched to the market in the spring, has been formulated in the laboratory in Aberdeen by Spencer's technical team.

Spencer's Technical Manager, Nick Dubbels, says: “We have taken a tried and tested formulation for our product Marine Gloss and mixed it with a bitumastic formulation to create a hybrid. The result is a unique one coat system product which can be used on metal and timber with no need for a primer. It also contains anti-corrosion pigments which make it very appealing when coating metal and steelwork”.

Spencer Coatings Ltd based in Froghall Terrace is one of the few remaining manufacturing business in the city of Aberdeen. The company, one of only two paint manufacturers in Scotland, specialises in industrial paint and protective coatings for agricultural machinery, motor parts, bridges, pipelines and offshore structures.

Formerly Spencer Paints, the business has been synonymous in the north-east with high quality decorative paints for almost 100 years. However, the company changed its focus in recent years, increasing its interests in industrial coatings, which currently accounts for 80 per cent of the business.
