Delegation of Russian steel producers visit Münster

A great success for BASF Coatings: from the middle of 2004, the company will supply Magnitogorsk Metall-Kombinat of Russia with coil coatings (precoatings for coiled metal strips). A four-member delegation of the steel producer recently visited the BASF Coatings plant in Münster to obtain information on the development and production of coatings and to intensify contact.

Magnitogorsk Metall-Kombinat (MMK) is one of the 20 largest steel producers worldwide and has about 65,000 employees. The company takes its name from the city in which it has its headquarters. Magnitogorsk is in southern Ural, on the border between Europe and Asia. The company has now invested about 20 million in a coil coating plant. BASF Coatings will be the main coil coatings supplier. The first delivery is scheduled to leave for Magnitogorsk, located 4,000 km from Münster, in July 2004. BASF Coatings will also support MMK during the start-up of the new installation.

“At the meeting in Münster, we were able to expand the contact with our partners. Intensive discussions about future joint processes, for example, with the purchasing agent and head of Production, as well as with our experts from Production, Sales, and Development, have furthered our incipient partnership,” said Uwe Pelchen, head of Precoatings Sales Central and Eastern Europe, who has already been in Magnitogorsk several times with his BASF team from Moscow. In the meantime, the guests from Russia have gained an impression as to how the new partner develops and produces innovative coatings. A visit to the new distribution centre was also on the agenda.
