Adhesive raw materials – dynamic momentum in a technology-driven business

Ralph Schweens, Head of the Regional Business Unit Adhesives and Construction Industry Europe, spoke to journalists about BASF's global adhesive raw materials business on the occasion of the coating centre's opening. With sales of around 280 million, it is one of the main pillars of the functional polymers division and comprises aqueous pressure sensitive adhesives, industrial and construction adhesive raw materials.

"BASF is the world leader in pressure sensitive adhesives. We are continuing to invest in this dynamic market and have consolidated our position as an innovative trendsetter, as our new coating centre shows. And above all: with our Acronal® range, we already have the products that make it even possible to achieve top production speeds of 1,500m/min for aqueous pressure sensitive adhesives" emphasized Mr Schweens.

The crucial factor behind the dynamic growth in the market for self-adhesive products was the availability of aqueous pressure sensitive adhesives – first developed by BASF more than 50 years back. Their application is intricately linked to coating technology. In this technologically sophisticated field, BASF has time and again played a pioneering role in further refining existing coating systems and developing proprietary systems such as the vario gravure coating process and the new AGS 2500 S System BASF. BASF's new coating centre for pressure sensitive adhesives at its Ludwigshafen site sets a benchmark and enhances the strength of its competence centre for adhesive raw materials.

Water-based pressure sensitive adhesives are marketed by BASF under the brand name Acronal® and UV hot melt adhesives under the brand name acResin®.
