The Greerco colloid mill from mixing specialist Chemineer has enabled a coatings firm in the North East of England to drastically improve the quality and efficiency of its production (Plates 7 and 8).

The highly effective in-line processing unit, which is designed to rapidly and uniformly disperse solids and/or liquids, has successfully produced stable emulsions to the sub micron range, repeatedly reproducing unvarying particle-size accuracy and distribution.

This 15 KW Greerco colloid mill has been supplied as a horizontal system (although mobile vertical units are also available) and is fitted with a special rotor and stator that feature grooved milling surfaces. The unit has reduced the dispersed phase droplets in the coatings process to an extremely small size – usually 2 microns or less, with many droplets in the sub micron range.

This innovative Chemineer product can also be fitted with a hopper for batch processing. The homogenized product is circulated until samples indicate that the material is ready for discharge.
