Sysmex FPIA-2100Keywords: Malvern Instruments, Sizing, Particles

The FPIA-2100, which is described as a new system for the fully automated measurement of both particle size and shape, was amongst Malvern's exhibits at the recent European Coatings Show, in Nuremberg. It is said to provide the ability to measure both these parameters and is believed to represent a real breakthrough for the many applications where shape as well as size affect the behaviour of particulate materials.

New developments for the Mastersizer 2000, Malvern's laser diffraction analyzer, were also on show and included the Hydro 2000 Micro Precision Sample Dispersion Unit, which is said to allow the precise sampling of small quantities of materials, enabling scarce or valuable samples to be preserved with considerable savings in both solvent consumption and disposal costs (Plate 7).

New "Micro" and "Macro" sample trays for the Malvern Mastersizer 2000's Scirocco sample dispersion unit are said to pave the way for highly reproducible particle size measurement of milligram quantities of dry samples. Also introduced with the new sample trays is a tray cover that fastens at just a single point, making operation especially easy for applications where gloves must be worn.

The Scirocco claims high performance and ease of use for all dry materials, with standard operating procedures (SOPs) in the software, allowing even complete beginners to obtain results comparable with those from expert operators.

Computer control of the dispersive air pressure ensures reproducible measurement of fragile materials with minimum attrition and the Scirocco efficiently disperses "difficult" materials, such as very fine metal powders, at lower dispersive air pressures, with quiet operation.

In-process particle size analysis using the Insitec system is enhanced with the introduction of a new automation package, Malvern Link, that allows full integration into Distributed Control Systems.
