Ingersoll-Rand has launched the new ASAP range of spray coating packages for efficient spray application of a range of liquids including paints, fillers, stains, paints, lacquers, sealers, enamels, varnishes, resins and adhesives (Plate 5).

The new packages cover a range of technologies: HVLP (high volume, low pressure) air spraying; airless spraying and air-assisted airless spraying. HVLP air spraying is increasingly popular in the automotive bodyshop and paint repair market. Airless spraying is said to be an excellent method for applying finishes to steel structures, storage tanks, buildings, concrete and heavy equipment. It is also considered good for spraying adhesives and lubricants. Air-assisted airless spraying systems are typically used to apply finishes to products such as lawn and patio furniture, office furniture, appliances and farm machinery.

The HVLP spraying products from Ingersoll-Rand are available in a choice of configurations including wall-mounted and 5-gallon/55-gallon container packages. Equipped with 1/4-inch, 1/2-inch or 1-inch fluid ports, there are packages offering a choice of groundable wetted parts, stainless steel wetted parts and the use of the new Ingersoll-R and 3:1 ratio pump.

The 5-gallon container packages are available with either 1/4-inch or 1/2-inch fluid ports, while the 55-gallon container packages have 1/2-inch or 1-inch outlets. These container packages comprise a diaphragm pump, stainless steel drum cover, stainless steel siphon tube, air line filter/regulator with air coupler/connector and a fluid pressure regulator. The wall-mounted units incorporate an additional stainless steel wall-mount bracket.

There is also a wide choice of configurations for the airless spray packages, including 28:1 ratio carbon steel pump products; 28:1 ratio container-mounted packages; 28:1 ratio trolley-mounted packages and 30:1 and 45:1 trolley-mounted packages based on new Integrity stainless steel pumps from Ingersoll-Rand.

The air-assisted airless supply packages utilise 9:1 and 15:1 ratio pumps in stainless steel and carbon steel construction, respectively. The 9:1 and 15:1 ratio systems are both available in wall-mounted or trolley-mounted configurations.

HVLP is a spray process which uses a high volume of air (15-22cfm) at a low pressure (10psi or less) to atomise a material. The air cap of the HVLP gun injects air into the fluid after it passes through the orifice restriction. The low velocity of the material being sprayed minimises the overspray and bounceback that is associated with conventional air spray. Owing to its high transfer efficiency (the total percent of material that actually stays on the intended surface) and quality finish, HVLP is becoming increasingly popular.

Airless spray is the process of forcing a material, under high pressure, through a small orifice. The restriction created by a small orifice causes the material to atomise. This process produces very little overspray. Like Airless Spray, Air-Assisted airless is a process where material, under pressure, is forced through a small orifice. The restriction of the orifice causes the material to be atomised. In addition, the specially designed tip introduces compressed air into the fluid stream to further atomise the material. The result is a finer quality finish than airless spray with even less overspray.
