Key equipment of the new paint shop being installed by Ford at its Transit van and bus production plant in Southampton is being supplied by Durr UK of Warwick in conjunction with its parent company, Durr Systems GmbH a global organisation specialising in automotive paint shop technologies.

Durr has secured the £4.6 million contract to supply the electro-static paint application machines for the primer and enamel spray booths. The equipment has been specified under Ford's international VO (Vehicle Operations) specifications for capital investments.

"These are global specifications which place greater emphasis on plant performance and reliability throughout its planned operational lifetime", says contracts manager Stuart Moorcroft, adding: "In order to ensure smooth integration on site and rapid ramp-up to target production levels, the machines will be assembled and tested as modules at Durr workshops prior to delivery."

The new Southampton paint shop is the first of any facilities at Ford plants in Europe to have the major installation under the global specification. Deliveries of the first plant modules are scheduled through to December 1998 for installation and trials during the Spring with production start up due in August 1999.

The primer booth comprises eight guns for stone chip protection followed by a 12 bell primer zone with five colours. The enamel colour booth which will be capable of spraying all colours plus a clear coat material, will be fitted with 24 bells plus additional guns for sills and drip rails.

While white is the most popular choice for Transit vans, the paint shop will be equipped to offer customers a wide variety of colours, including metallics for mini-bus models which are all finished with a high quality gloss coat.
