Chemoxy to invest in major UK toll hydrogenation manufacturing plant

Chemoxy International is aiming to become a major toll hydrogenation source worldwide by investing in a £1 million conversion of an existing plant at its manufacturing complex in Middlesbrough, Teesside (Plate 13).

The company, which is already well established as one of the largest contract chemicals manufacturers in Europe, plans the new hydrogenation plant will have a capacity of 10,000 tonnes per annum. The plant, commissioned in June 1998, features a "loop reactor" system and makes use of palladium- and platinum-based precious metal catalysts.

Ventron Technology of Manchester has been awarded the contract to undertake the construction project.

The new plant's hydrogenation products will be ideal for companies seeking cost effective supplies of raw materials with which to manufacture a range of products including speciality amines, alcohols and oleochemicals.

Commenting on the new investment, Ian Stark, Chemoxy International's managing director, said: "We are targeting the output from this new plant at a specific segment of the toll hydrogenation market worldwide. The plant will attract companies who are likely to require a cost effective and reliable source for 50-5,000 tonnes of hydrogenation products per annum. Hydrogenation is a logical extension to our existing toll manufacturing services because the hydrogenated products can be purified on Chemoxy's high resolution fractionation columns."

Currently, there are a number of small scale (1-5 tonnes) hydrogenation reactors available for toll manufacturing in the UK but they tend to command relatively high prices. The Chemoxy initiative aims to address the growing number of manufacturers worldwide who require medium-sized volumes of hydrogenated products at a competitive price from a reputable source.
