A profile of the paint industry of the Americas

A profile of the paint industry of the Americas

The present political stability of many countries of Latin America (most of which have now had a democratic non-military government for several years), as well as positive moves to bring inflation under control, bodes well for the future of the paint industry of the whole region. In particular, the creation of the NAFTA and Mercosur free trade zones, together with the rapid industrialisation of Mexico, Brazil and Argentina, is increasing demand for coatings of all types. This is one of the conclusions of the second edition of the Profile of the Paint Industry of the Americas recently issued by Information Research Limited.

The present production of paint throughout the Americas is currently estimated at some 7.3 million tons per annum, a level expected to grow to over 9.7 million tons by 2005, to 11.2 million tons by 2010. Of the current output, almost 70 per cent is produced in the USA and a further 10.7 per cent in Brazil, with the highest future growth predicted for Mexico (at almost 7.5 per cent per annum) and the countries of Central America (about 9 per cent yearly).

The report reviews the structure of each of the national markets, including production levels, consumption, and numbers of paint producers. The market leaders are identified in each case, together with their size (in terms of numbers of employees) and market positions. Of particular note is the increasing involvement in South America by many of the European and US multinationals by means of an increasing number of acquisitions over the past four years. These are all listed in the study and further changes in the structure of many national industries are predicted.

Long-term trends in the region are discussed, as well as detailed predictions for each national market up to 2010. In addition, guidelines are provided to enable firms in the field to exploit the perceived potential to maximum effect by the development of an appropriate strategic business plan. The report also includes a directory of some 300 significant paint producers covering 31 countries.

The report, which parallels those on the "European Paint Industry" and the "Asian-Pacific Paint Industry", comprises 203 pages and includes 83 tables with nine figures. It is available at a cost of £400.00 per copy, plus postage and packing, from Information Research Limited, 207 Regent Street, London W1R 7DD, UK. Fax: +44 (0) 171 287 9322.
