Canmaker meets emissions targets

Canmaker meets emissions targets

Haden Drysys Environmental, the specialist supplier of environmental control systems, has completed a project worth in region of half amillion pounds to ensure process emissions regulations compliance for USC Europe UK Ltd, with the installation of a three canister regenerative thermal oxidiser at the company's premises in Southall, Middlesex.

Formerly the Crown Cork and Seal Company, USC Europe is one of the UK's largest canmakers, producing a range of aerosol containers. The new oxidiser serves three wicket ovens for curing tin plate. Sheets of tin plate are printed and lacquered prior to being formed into aerosol containers, and the sheets pass along a continuous moving belt where they are held separately in racks for drying in the ovens. Inevitably the drying and curing process gives rise to Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) emissions, as well as an odour problem which USC was also keen to tackle.

USC had already installed three wet scrubbers some years previously, but these were not coping well with the process exhaust load, and needed a high level of maintenance. Haden stripped out the wet scrubbers and installed a three canister regenerative thermal oxidiser with a capacity of 36,000NM3hr and a destruction efficiency in excess of 99.5 per cent, within a slightly longer than usual annual shutdown period. Haden has also installed all the connecting ductwork and provided system balancing. The oxidiser employs Haden's SMART System, to conserve fuel and keep running costs to a minimum, and is auto thermal, meaning that it runs without support fuel when the VOC concentration in the exhaust stream is sufficiently high to maintain destruction temperatures.

Up on the roof limited space at the premises of USC Europe UK Ltd in Southall meant that Haden Drysys Environmental installed a Regenerative Thermal Oxidiser above the building it serves

The installation itself posed an interesting logistical challenge as there was insufficient room on site to house the oxidiser. This dilemma was overcome by constructing a steel framework to support the oxidiser above the canning plant, with the leg supports going down through the roof and into the buildings, where foundations were pile-driven into a screened off section of the factory floor.
