Health and safety
Health and safety failures cost the UK £18 billion every year. Over 400 people are killed annually in work-related accidents, while 2 million suffer from work related illnesses. Around 25 million working days are lost every year as a result of work-related accidents and ill health. The Revitalising Health and Safety initiative was introduced in June 2000. It aims to reduce the incidence of working days lost from work-related injury and ill health by 30 per cent; reduce the incidence of people suffering from work related ill health by 20 per cent and reduce the rate of fatal and major accidents by 10 per cent. Specific industries have been targeted – construction, agriculture and the Health Service sector – where the Health and Safety Commission believes there is a pressing need for health and safety improvements.
