Chromium and non-insulin dependent diabetes

Chromium and non-insulin dependent diabetes

Chromium is essential for the control of insulin action and it has been suggested that marginal chromium deficiency may be a factor in maturity onset diabetes. Collaborative work between the Institute of Food Research, the Bertram Diabetes Unit at the West Norwich Hospital and the Centrel Science Laboratory in York has investigated this link. They found that supplements of chromium rich yeast had no effect in patients whose diet was not deficient in chromium. Adults took tablets containing chromium rich yeast for eight weeks and underwent a glucose tolerance test at the start and the finish of the study. Speaking about the research Professor Sue Fairweather-Tait said that the study clearly showed that maturity onset diabetes is not the result of a chromium deficiency and does not respond to adding high chromium yeast to the diet.
