Drug misuse

Figures on problem drug misuse covering the six-month period ending September 1997 were published recently. The number of individual users presenting to agencies (21,996) decreased by 15 per cent from the previous six month period. The largest decrease was for users reported by GPs. As in the previous periods over half (54 per cent) were in their 20s and around one in eight were aged under 20. The ratio of males to females 3:1, was the same as in previous periods. Heroin was still the most frequently reported drug of use accounting for over half of users (56 per cent). The next most frequently reported main drugs of misuse were methadone (13 per cent), amphetamines (9per cent) and cannabis (9 per cent).
