Young and active

This is the title of a new report produced by the Health Education Authority. The report recommends that children and young people should be active for one hour every day to enjoy better physical and mental health, the first time such a national recommendation has been made. The report suggests that those who currently do little activity should start with at least half an hour's exercise and gradually build up. Young and Active also suggests specific roles for key organisations including schools, youth groups, central and local government, health services and the media to play in promoting physical activity. Charles Clarke, Schools Minister said, "New measures to save school playing fields from closure will mean young people continue to have the space they need for physical activity, while 26 specialist sports colleges will provide sports facilities not just for their own pupils but for those from nearby schools, too. In addition thousands of new after-school clubs will offer extra opportunities for sport outside the normal school hours."
