Frost & Sullivan's recent analysis, World X-ray and Vision Inspection Systems in Electronics Manufacturing Markets, selected Phoenix X-Ray Systems and Services GmbH as the recipient of the 2004 Product Line Strategy Leadership Award (Plate 2).

Every year, Frost & Sullivan presents this award to the company that has demonstrated significant insight into customer needs and product demands. Phoenix X-Ray Systems and Services has optimised its product line by offering applications over a range of price, performance, and feature points required by the market.

Commencing operations in April 1999, Phoenix has since grown by the virtue of its strong product line offerings and by working closely with its customers.

Today, the company offers around 20 different types of products, ranging from a simple 2D inspection system to complex 3D tomography systems, which include microfocus and nanofocus systems with oblique view at high magnification (OVHM) and computer tomography (CT) capabilities. Products available comprise a wide selection from a very small benchtop unit, priced at approximately $50 thousand to computer tomography systems at nearly $1 million.

“phoenix's strength lies in the flexibility and versatility of its product offerings that provide end users with a plethora of alternatives based on applications, price, and performance requirements,” says Frost & Sullivan Industry Analyst Karthik R.

For example, among the high-end solutions Phoenix offers in the market is the nanome x series that provides very high resolution, around 200 nm, at submicron range. Applications of nanome x systems include detecting finest wire defects, pad wetting analysis on area array devices, and flip-chip substrate bond integrity. A significant feature of nanome x systems is that they come with an OVHM option and a computer tomography option.

The company also offers X-ray systems at microfocus range, which caters to the inspection needs of multilayer boards and checks details in IC packages.

Phoenix's 3D tomography products include the V tome x series which have the option of a nanofocus®. Image processing tools developed for convenient inspection of ball grid array (BGA) and chip scale package (CSP) back the entire set of X-ray hardware.

The company's success clearly lies in developing application-oriented products. Phoenix's strong product line gives it a competitive edge and appeals to customers as a one-stop shop for their various application requirements.

To further boost the product portfolio, Phoenix works closely with its original equipment manufacturer (OEM) customers, aiming to provide customised solutions, and to build better performance capabilities, the company has forged a joint venture with a physics institute in Germany.

An increased use of advanced packages in the electronics industry has escalated demand for X-ray inspection. The primary package that has had a positive impact has been the BGA, especially with surface mount devices, wherein X-rays can penetrate devices and view solder balls beneath the component. Phoenix has been capitalising on this trend and its product portfolio is poised to further strengthen its position in the market in the near future.
