New Chairman for IMAPS UK

New Chairman for IMAPS UK

At the IMAPS UK Annual General Meeting held in Cambridge on March 2nd, Mr Peter Ongley was elected Chairman. Mr. Andy Longford was elected Vice-Chairman, Mr. Michael Whiteside Treasurer, and Mr. David Lowry as both Secretary and Membership Secretary. Mr. Steve Muckett remains on the Committee as immediate Past Chairman (Plate 1).

The Chairman informed the meeting that in recognition of the enormous contribution made to IMAPS-UK consistently over 30 years, that the role of Honorary President has been offered to Mr. Brian Waterfield, who had accepted the position for a 3-year tenure.

Commenting on his view for the future of IMAPS-UK, the new Chairman Peter Ongley commented that the institute needed to focus on its position to serve the industry, and raise the profile. Rebuilding the membership was a priority, and with major electronics programmes being revitalised in the UK he was confident that several large corporate members would be taking advantage of the many services offered by IMAPS-UK.

The current IMAPS-UK Website offers Corporate Advertising and the main slot is becoming available very soon. Other facilities are available through the appropriate links.

The planned IMAPS European Website should also help in overall future publicity and assist membership in identifying the main IMAPS offerings available.

Whilst admitting that it had been disappointing that no one from the University of Cambridge had attended the Microtech Conference held at the Møeller Centre on March 1st and 2nd, he said that through the work of committee member Professor Chris. Bailey of the University of Greenwich links to universities were strengthening, and he was particularly pleased that a student from Heriot-Watt University had not only contributed to the new Poster Sessions held during the conference, but that the student, Dominik Weiland had been given the Best Poster Award for a presentation of outstanding technical merit. His subject was “Two dimensional single mode optical fibre array manufacture using microengineering techniques”.

Peter concluded Microtech 2005 had been a most successful conference; next year they would be taking the whole Study Centre for the event, and the Market Watch Panel session (topics included Emerging Technologies, Market Trends, Supply Chain, Environmental & Lead free) would definitely be included in the programme following the huge interest this year.

Microtech 2006 will focus on: System in Package Technologies and will again be held in the Moller Centre Cambridge, on 7th & 8th March 2006. Ref. www.imaps.org.uk
