Advances in microelectronics during the new millennium will be influenced not only by the microprocessor – which continues to focus on the personal computer by providing it with ever-increasing amounts of computing power – but also by its relatives the microcontroller and the digital signal processor (DSP), which represent the "heart" of embedded systems.

They are now growing at a much faster rate than microprocessors, and even the world's leading semiconductor manufacturer, Intel, is banking on communications and networking chips in its latest growth estimates.

Miniature "brains" made of silicon can be found in nearly every device that modern man comes into contact with, from kitchen appliances to automobiles and mobile telephones. Given the growing importance of this branch of microelectronics and annual increases in volume of up to 50 per cent, Electronica 2000 – from November 21-24 at the New Munich Trade Fair Centre – will feature an entire sector dedicated to embedded systems in Hall A3 (right next to the semiconductor halls A4 through A6).
