Johnson Matthey Electronics (JME) and Thermacore International Inc. announced that they have signed a strategic business agreement that will combine each company's field of expertise in thermal management and allow for a joint marketing and sales program.

JME is a world-leading supplier of interconnect products and thin-film deposition materials to the semiconductor, microelectronics and telecommunications industries, and Thermacore International Inc. is a global supplier of thermal management products to the microelectronics, power semiconductor and telecommunications industries.

Under the agreement, the companies will develop products that bring to market high technology-based thermal management solutions that will enhance product reliability, reduce costs and improve time-to-market. This agreement complements one signed by JME and Flomerics Inc. in June 1998 and adds a third component to JME's "One Team/Best Solution" business strategy.

"Many semiconductor industry experts and executives believe that effective heat removal from advanced IC packages is one of the major impediments to further reducing the size, weight and cost of commercial products" said Brent Bollong, general manager of JME Thermal Management group. "Our strategic relationship with Thermacore, as well as with Flomerics, creates a team of industry experts that will provide customers with unique assistance and access to integrated design, validation and manufacturing of thermal management products."

The business agreement is an example of JME's strategy to enhance its position in the thermal management market, especially for computers, servers and workstations. Thermacore currently major companies in those markets including Compaq and Hewlett-Packard. JME will broaden Thermacore's market access, and the two companies will work together with Flomerics Inc. to provide customers with optimum thermal management solutions.

"The global market for thermal management products is estimated at more than $1 billion and growing at a compound annual rate of 15 percent, said Donald Ernst, vice-president of technology developments for Thermacore. "We offer JME a deep technical base in thermal management development and design, and JME offers us its manufacturing expertise and capacity. Together we will deliver the industry's most comprehensive combination of thermal design, validation and manufacturing capabilities".
