Knowledge creation and management: inseparable twins

Knowledge creation and management: inseparable twins

H.J. Bajaria, Total Quality Management (UK), Vol. 11 No. 4/5&6, July 2000

Declares that the challenges facing firms through increasing employee mobility, are creating knowledge bases (knowledge creation – KC) and keeping them updated (knowledge management – KM). Explicates what constitutes KC and KM by several short examples. Uses a progressive model (data (i) - information (ii) – knowledge (iii) – wisdom (iv)) to discuss the KC/KM challenge. Draws again on illustrative examples to cover (i) use of information technology for raw data organization (KM), and bias, incompleteness, and inappropriateness of raw data (KC) (ii) data transformation to information via multi-vari charts and summaries (KM), and combinations of control/Pareto chart or box-and-whisker plot information for problem solving (KC) (iii) retrieving existing knowledge relating to an existing situation for problem-solving (KM) and determining solutions from a probabilistic approach (KC) and (iv) deciding whether past actions are relevant to current circumstances (KM) and using creativity to implement new knowledge (KC). Gives a summary table of KM and KC distinctions for each element, concluding that KM/KC integration is necessary for competitive advantage.

Quality focus says: A highly original theoretical article but with applications in practice.
