The winners of the European Quality Award 2000 were announced at the recent EFQM Forum in Istanbul.

The winners are:

  • Nokia (Finland, Large Businesses Category).

  • Inland Revenue Account Office (UK, Public Sector Category).

  • Burton-Apta Refractory Manufacturing (Hungary, SMEs Category).

It is particularly notable that this was Nokia's first application to the Award – normally it takes a few, the first attempts being used more as a benchmarking exercise against the EFQM model. This is also the first year to feature a winner in the Public Sector Category.

The three winners were chosen from a shortlist of 23. "Runners-up" included:

  • Arcelik AS (Turkey).

  • Eczacibasi Vitra (Turkey).

  • IRIZA (Spain) in the Large Business Category.

  • Arbejdsformidlingen Ringkoebing (Denmark).

  • Foxdenton School (UK) in the Public Sector Category.

  • Avaya Ireland Ltd.

  • Water Team sri (Italy).

  • Zahnarztpraxis (Switzerland) in the SMEs Category.

Peter Dowcra, EFQM Awards manager said: "It is most beneficial for the European Quality Award to have winners from very different countries and in diverse sectors of operation. Moreover, we have noticed that organizations have incorporated and integrated the EFQM Model into their ways of working before their first application, which leads to new and fresh names on our list of winners. This shows our impact has gone far beyond what we have noticed in the past."

Following the Awards, there will be the usual programme of winners' conferences starting late 2000 and running into mid-2001. These events allow participants to learn from the Award recipients. They are organized by the various countries national quality organizations and tailored to meet local requirements, featuring a national role model, where possible. Events planned for 2001 include:

  • February 13-15, Helsinki, Finland.

  • March 1, Lucerne, Switzerland.

  • March 14-15, Offenbach, Germany.

  • April 25, Zaragoza, Spain.

  • May 1-3, Dublin, Ireland.

  • May 9, Ankara, Turkey.

  • May 16, Thessaloniki, Greece.

  • June 21, Boulogne-Billancourt, France.
