Welcome to the Journal of Service ManagementJOSM.

It is important to note that is not a brand new journal but the International Journal of Service Industry ManagementIJSIM re-launched under a new name and revised editorial scope. The journal will continue to publish high-quality peer-reviewed academic papers and be supported by an internationally respected Editorial Advisory Board. The Editorial Team is extremely proud of the research IJSIM has published over the last 19 years and we wholeheartedly thank all those authors who have written for the journal. However, as we enter the 20th volume of the journal a universal decision was made to acknowledge the changes that have taken place in service management and re-launch the journal. The ISSN will change but it will still be possible to access all content as before and the journal’s volume number will continue.

Changing a name of an established journal is not easy and possible without a lot of work and support from Emerald and all who are involved in the journal. A new name must be combined with carefully planned marketing activities. The journal will be represented at a number of key international conferences and promoted via list serves in 2009. If you are attending a conference and are happy to help us promote the re-launch of the journal please contact the publisher, Kate Snowden (ksnowden@emeraldinsight.com).

The revised mission of JOSM is to add theoretically anchored, empirically validated research to the understanding of service and its effective management in all sectors of society. The journal will publish articles that make important contributions and add value to the knowledge base of the science of service.

The aim of JOSM is to make possible publishing research for all who are interested in the study of management of service and service organizations, irrespective of academic discipline, functional area, sector or nationality. JOSM is a leading scholarly journal with a truly global and trans-disciplinary perspective on service management. Contributions to this journal are especially welcomed from academics, but practitioners are also encouraged to contribute. We will continue to emphasize the importance of research rigor and managerial relevance. JOSM prefers manuscripts that span disciplines and that include substantiation from all relevant literatures. The journal welcomes empirical, theoretical and conceptual papers as well as scholarly literature overviews and debate articles.

I would also welcome contributions that provide energy and directions to the debate on the future of service research. These may take the form of articles but also research notes, teaching notes and commentaries. “Guru’s views” on specific issues or topics in service research is one way to stimulate the development of the journal and the debate on service research and service science.

I look forward to your continued support as we enter the new era for the JOSM.
