Heidenhain absolute rotary encoders with multi-turn measuring range for determining position over large distances via digital signals are able to replace conventional position switches in applications such as elevator position control (see Plate 4).
Plate 4 Heidenhain absolute rotary encoders with multi-turn measuring range are ideal for positioning over large distances
The absolute capability of Heidenhain encoders simplifies installation by eliminating adjustment and, because the actual position is permanently available, the absolute encoder is always able to position directly to the desired floor with the absolute position continuously maintained, even after a power failure.
A key feature of the Heidenhain encoder is the ability to provide the high powered bi-directional encoder data (EnDat) interface or uni-directional Synchronous-serial interface (SSI) which also supports encoder programmability.
The EnDat interface is able to output absolute position values within 50 microseconds, which is ideal for highly dynamic control loops. It can provide simultaneous output of incremental signals which minimises dead time in the control loop and serves for reading and writing to the internal memory of the encoder. In addition, the control system can be automatically configured through EnDat.
