Sensory Robotics for the Handling of Limp Materials brings together a set of papers which describe research and technological applications in this area. These papers were originally presented at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop, held in October 1988, in Italy.
Section I, Shoes and composites, includes two papers addressing "Sensory robotics related to shoe manufacture" and the "Automated application of soles to shoes". Garment manufacturing is then discussed in Section II. Topics covered include "A challenge to develop fully automated garment manufacture", "Limp materials research at North Carolina State University" and the "Analysis of a ply-separation gripper".
2D and 3D vision techniques are discussed in Section III - Sensing, while Section IV addresses Planning and control. This includes papers on "Adaptive control", "Planning and sensing trade-offs in robotics" and "Trajectory planning and obstacle avoidance".
Each section concludes with a summary of the discussion sessions, in which attempts were made to identify trends and future requirements. The final section is a round-up, giving details of the final discussion session.
Although this book addresses a specialist subject, it is suitable for academics, as well as those in industry and non-university research organisations.
