Comau, the parent company of Comau Robotics UK, purchased PICO Estil in 1999, this has added a major UK based engineering service that complements the robot division's capability to supply specific engineered applications to many industries. This support ensures that Comau Robotics can offer solutions to most production companies that require special engineering to meet the most exacting of applications in most fields.

Some of the varied applications undertaken in 1999 demonstrate this turnkey approach that Comau robotics UK can bring to solution engineering. TIG welding of motor stators for Newage Ltd increasing production twofold over manual welding and decreasing rejects rate by almost 100 per cent. Glue application of windscreens for Pilkington - allowing 17 variations of screens to be handled, glued and palletised without damage. Handling of ceramics for Wedgewood - stacking, manipulating and applying handles automatically to cups.

These applications selected from over 20, demonstrate the multiplicity of applications applied by Comau Robotics UK during the year, which complement the more common applications of spot welding, stud welding and three dimensional machining carried out utilising Comau robots.

Along with all these applications Comau Robotics UK has also added two new robot ranges to their already impressive list of robots during 1999, namely, the "H" range (see Plate 2) which has no external cabling or piping, ensuring maximum access and the ability to fully "off line programme" the robot. The S5 range is a specially developed robot for handling components loading and unloading where access is tri-dimensional and requires a vertical axis linear movement.

Plate 2Comau's SMART H4 has all cables and hoses housed within the robot, allowing greater dexterity and easier programming. Nearly 300 have been ordered by Volvo for its new car plant in Belgium

The incorporation of PICO Estil into the Comau Group and the introduction of Mike Tench the new manager of the robotics division at Telford, creates a new business emphasis for Comau Robotics which intends to undertake more specific application and unique solution engineering work than previously.
