The aim of this book is to develop and distribute the concepts of simulation surgery, which have found applications using computer graphics, virtual reality and robotics in plastic surgery and other surgical areas. This well written book comprises four sections with 28 chapters and numerous illustrations.

Section 1 is an introductory section and covers the concept of simulation surgery, a historical overview and different types of simulation surgery. The second section, Empirical simulation surgery, addresses "Practical considerations in empirical simulation surgery, with special reference to plastic surgery", "Colour simulation in reconstructive surgery" and "Plastic and reconstructive surgical simulation in simulation surgery: colour match and texture match in the free skin graft".

Section 3, Computer-aided simulation surgery, is divided into three subsections which include "Functional computer aided simulation surgery" and "Psychological computer aided simulation surgery". Several topics discussed within these subsections include "The computer and simulation surgery", "Fundamental application of computer-aided design in three-dimensional simulation surgery", "Craniofacial 3-D imaging from CT scans: evolution and utilisation of the technology", "Surgical simulation based on the mirror imaging technique", "New methodology for three-dimensional analysis of cranio-maxillofacial bones based on computed tomography scan data" and "Surgical planning system for osteotomy using three-dimensional images".

Other interesting chapters discussed are "Computer aided simulation surgery using a laser-curable resin model: preoperative preparation of hydroxyapatite prosthesis for bone defect repair", "CAD/CAM and robotics: a bioengineering application in the realisation of a bone prosthesis", "Simulation of joint surgery with 3-dimensional computed tomography - with particular reference to the hip joint", "Development of a computer-assisted support system in the field of surgical operation with 3-D imaging technique", "Computer animation in simulation surgery" and "Computer aided simulation surgery as an educational tool".

The fourth and final section of the book discusses the Fourth dimension in computer-aided simulation surgery.

Two appendices can be found which contain information about the founding members of ISSiS and abstracts from the inaugural congress of the ISSiS, respectively. An author and subject index is also included.
