China’s one child per family policy is coming back to bite them: they are running out of labour. A shortage of labour naturally causes wage levels to rise … and that’s what we are seeing. During the past year, wage levels are up 14 per cent in Shanghai, 18 per cent in Guandong (China’s industrial belt), and 28 per cent in the inland province of Chongqing, a lower-wage region to which manufacturing has only begun to relocate.
