Challenges ahead to feed growing populations

Article Type: News From: International Journal of Productivity and Performance Management, Volume 58, Issue 8

The Queensland Farmers Federation says the state’s rural sector is facing significant challenges to meet growing demand for food and fibre.

Chief executive officer Dan Galligan says the value of Queensland agriculture is set to increase to $34 billion in 2020 but issues like climate change and the management of natural resources need to be addressed.

“In terms of farming, we need to move on from the old story of just being viable and resilient, to “we’re a growing industry, a proactive industry, we’ve got lots of good stories to tell in terms of jobs and employment and we’ve got lots of good stories in terms of productivity and future growth”, he said.

“We need to plan for that to be an outcome we achieve.

“There’s no doubt there is certainly going to be more people by 2020 – they all need to be fed, so how are we actually going to increase our productivity?

“There’s those issues around public policy, regulation, the management of our natural resources, the fact that we’re not finding new areas of development – those sorts of issues need to be addressed proactively”.
