Getting tougher

No-one in the productivity movement can stand still. As one improves, so do one’s competitors. GM Europe president Carl-Peter Forster recently suggested that he wants productivity at Opel’s Rüsselsheim plant to rise by 3-5 per cent a year, either through more output with the same staff or the same volume with fewer staff. Full use of potential utilisation at Rüsselsheim would permit Vectra models to be produced in 19-20 hours compared with 26 hours at present, said Forster. This increase is needed to improve competitiveness.
